I am planning a prairie dogs shoot for next year in South Dakota. I would like to stay in the eastern part of the state to save on driving. I spoke with the reservations person at the Fort Randal Casino, in Pickstown. She said they put out a list of guides in sept/oct.
Anyone have any experience in this area?

My prarie dog hunting partners did a trip to a reservation in SD a few years ago...and will never go again! They took them to a bunch of shot out towns and lobbed shots at 500 yards. We now go to ND, the dickenson area. There is quite a bit of federal land you can hunt for free, but of course the best shooting is on ranches. Good luck!

I don't want to be accused of passing on bad second hand information. Here is how to find out the truth about tribal hunts.

Contact State Attorny's Office in Pierre, S. Dakota and ask about complaints or legal actions against any so-called prairie dog hunting operations.

Contact US Marshall's Office in Rapid City and ask about complaints or legal actions against any so-called prairie dog hunting operations.

Good shooting to you.

500 yards is where my AR and I feel most comfortable taking headshots on sod poodles; Anything farther I try for center of mass;)

Actually, I have never gone varmint hunting, so all advice is appreciated. I should probably hook up with one of the big ranches, but I liked the idea of helping out a local tribal area.

WOW!! I don't know what kind of AR you have that can shoot under an inch at 500 yards!!!!!! Once you're actually out on the plains, you realize that under 300 yards is where you need to be to hit a target the size of your fist.

Busted:rolleyes:

Right now i am 4 inches at 200yds in ideal conditions, but working on it. Sorry about the sarcasm, I am really looking for advice on a place which would welcome a new hunter. I have a new 17hmr, which is deadly accurate under 150 and the AR should reach out to 300 once I get my 68gr match hp's.

Sorry, didn't mean to be a smart a$$. You know, I had the most fun with my 17hmr trying to sneak to within range and popping them. I came back with about 500 rounds of extra 6mm and NO 17 ammo left! I popped em out to 212 yards and even flipped a jackrabbit at 120 yards. That little 17 loaded up with a v-max is the funnest little gun I've ever had!

If I were you, I would spend a little time on the phone. Call up the local DNR and DFW in ND and ask about federal land with dog towns. You will find what you're looking for.

I usually shoot in Converse Co. Wy. I use a 22 Mag and a 22 LR while the bbl cools on the 22-250. Good way to hone your off the shoulder shooting. With a rest the 22 Mag is good for 200 yds with Federal ammo.
