Patching a gun stock finish

Say, a high gloss stock like the older Remington 700s? Could I just use polyurethane, let it dry, then buff it with emory cloth?

The 1970s through 1980s Rem 700s are some of the hardest stocks to fix and match the finish. I have had some success using spray Varathane, let harden several days, sanding with 600 grit, then buffing.

I've had luck matching the finish with polyurethane and wetsanding. Treat it as an automotive finish since they actually used DuPont Imron industrial urethane for the finish. Give the poly plenty of time to harden and make sure you put enough on so you can wet sand it down to blend in with original finish. Wet sand with 1500 grit and a drop of water in a circular motion. Then buff it out on a buffing wheel and it'll be good as new.
