Parkerized Hunting Rifle

I'm considering having a rifle built for general all around use including hunting, carrying around in my truck, target shooting, etc. I'm thinking about having it parkerized instead of some other type of coating simply b/c I like the look and feel of it. Anyone have any agreements/disagreements to this idea and suggestions as to who would provide this service?

Parkerizing is everywhere - go talk to a local machine shop. Make sure you get the type of oil you want it soaked in after the process.

That said, I like the epoxy paints over a park-job. It's a lot more durable.

My .243 is Lube-rited. Same process using different chemicals. Don't go to a machine shop though. They don't do it. They send anything they need a coating on out to a metal finishing shop.
Look in the Yellow Pages for a metal finishing shop and call a few. Ask if they do parkerizing and if they will do a firearm. Parkerizing is an ancient finish now and not all metal finishers can or will do it or firearms.

Parkerizing has been used since the early 1900's and is a well-proven, durable gun finish.
The rough finish retains lubricants and this makes the finish rust resistant.

There are a good number of companies around that offer it for guns, so I'd recommend have one of them do it.

Here's a few top companies that offer it:
http://www.fordsguns.com/ (Possibly the best gun re-finisher company around).

You can also check the gunsmithing pages in the Shotgun News for other companies offering it.
