Parker Hale rifles

Was browsing the local shop and handled a Parker Hale (used) in .300 mag. It appears to have a large ring Mauser receiver and a real nice stock with a raised cheek piece and a beaver tail fore end. Muzzle crown and bore look excellent and the bluing is rich.

Used, but certainly not abused.

Are these quality rifles, are they still made, and would you recommend one?

Thanks,

These are essentially a British version of the basic 98 Mauser pattern. Most of them have a better gas shroud on the bolt that changes their appearance somewhat from a typical Mauser.
I have owned a couple of these.
My biggest objection to the .300 mag version I had was the release on the floorplate. It is located inside of the trigger guard, and tended to get released under recoil, dumping the contents of the magazine into the dirt, snow, or whatever I was standing on/in at the time.
I fixed this by pinning the floorplate closed in a semipermanent fashion.

Nice guns, adequate for most hunting purposes. Not the most accurate out of the box, but can usually be tuned to acceptable levels with proper bedding and crowning.
