"Ghost Rings",ST, are a peep sight setup with a large aperture. This is a fast but reasonably accurate setup for close range work.Installing a standard peep and unscrewing the aperture makes it a GR sight.

First one I saw was on an antiquated Remington auto rifle in 35 Rem,circa 1958-60.

There's 6 shoulder arms here at Casa McC capable of being used for deer hunting. 5 of them have peeps on them and the apertures are unscrewed at need.

Both of the 870s suitable for HD have them.

It's a large aperture, as Dave said, with a thin ring. As you focus on the front sight, the ring blurs out, or becomes "ghost-like". One of the earliest to describe and use this system was "Karamojo" Bell; he used them on his 7mm Mauser (or .275 Rigby) for ivory hunting. Jeff Cooper claims to have coined the term, though.
