Paramilitary rifle suggestions

Howdy y'all. Been really curious about some of the discussions everyones been having here. Been looking for a paramilitary rifle for competing with friends.
Main specs that I've been lookin for new gun only (no accessories until i get more money ;( ) -2000 price range. Since its gonna take me a couple months to get the money together. No AK looks please :P the ones that peaked my interest was in the other thread. These are just some that was most commented in some others.

Springfield Scout/Socom 16

Sig Sauer 556/516

Barrett Rec7 (very interested in this one)

Armalite (haven't reasearched as much)

Springfield Scout/Socom 16
springfield M1A family is a M14 clone in 308 caliber so it's good out to 600 yards with good optics.
a couple drawbacks are high pricetag an as far as semi auto calibers go 308 is pretty spendy but it's a good gun and springfield has a lifetime warrantee.

Sig Sauer 556/516
not a good gun at all, they are plagued with reliability issues and are considered by many to be the absolute worst combat style semi auto ever released.

Barrett Rec7 (very interested in this one)
I know very little about this. barrett is a very good company with a very good reputation for quality. they normally manufacture sniper rifles in 50bmg but have recently moved into the AR market. the rec7 is an AR15 with a gas piston cycling system installed, the gas system pretty much just makes it so you don't have to clean your gun as often, it is only a real necessity if you are firing thousands of rounds in a single outting. standard direct impingement cycled AR15s are able to fire several hundred rounds before they get dirty enough to start causing reliability issues.

Armalite (haven't reasearched as much)
armalite is a company, not a gun, you will have to be a bit more specific.

I generally recommend a good economy model AR15 for people who are looking to get into the "mall ninja" craze. palmetto state armory PSA15, the smith and wesson M&P15 sport and DPMS sportical are all good economy AR15s that are all in the $600 range and will teach you thin ins and outs of the design. if you decide later that you want a gas piston there is the Barrett, Stag, Rock River Arms, Adams arms, Ruger, and I believe spikes tactical all make AR15s with the gas piston. if you decide you just want a higher quality rifle for bragging rights then there is colt, spikes, rock river arms, adams arms and a number of other companies that I'm sure I've forgotten.

just for the record you chose a very wide range of guns ranging from sniper/scout to close quarters combat rifles, you might think about what kind of applications you want to use it for and then move from there, otherwise you are just hobbling yourself and making it difficult for others to try to help

Thanks fer the input. I just threw socom since it brings the feel back of m1 garands. And Armalite is a company yes, but havent really looked into any guns. Was just seeing for suggestions of what would be good from the company. AR-15's seem over used IMHO.

Real Garands are available as well, mainly from the DCM, but from some other sources as well.

Yes, Colt 6920, that's the real M4, except with a 16" barrel instead of 14.5", and semi automatic. You can't beat the real thing! And it is far cheaper and lighter than any piston rifles, like the Sig5.56.

FAL is also great, but 308 is no good CQB, and it costs more than AR-15's.

The 6920 is Colt's civilian version of the M4. It has a 16inch barrel and lacks an auto selector. Otherwise, same parts as an issue M4.

Bushmaster Stainless Varmint Special - also looks very nice
Bushmaster ACR - Also very interesting. Any info on reliability and accuracy?
I don't know anything about the varmint special but one thing I've noticed a while ago is that just about any AR15 variant that bushmaster makes, DPMS also makes but cheaper since it doesn't carry the reputation that bushmaster does.

I have shot the ACR on a couple occasions and it failed to grow on my either time. I am primarily an AR and AK kind of guy but I noticed that despite the fact that the ACR is well over 70% plastic, it was heavier than a VZ58 I was shooting alongside(very similar profile and weight to an AK47). the accuracy at 25 yards was atrocious for a 5.56x45mm and comparable to a weapon firing 7.62x39mm. in an effort to make the ACR completely unique from already existing paramilitary designs, they moved the controls to places that made it incredibly difficult to actuate, nothing was in a convenient spot and was horrible for both left and right handed shooters to try and pick up the design. the trigger was alright but nothing special. the guys I was shooting with and I eventually got fed up and exchanged the ACR for bushmaster AR15s to finish shooting up all the 5.56 ammo we had already bought.

I am not very impressed with any of the newer paramilitary designs. they try too hard to make them unique and end up trading functionality for aesthetics. the only modern rifle I was able to adapt to was the FN herstal FS2000 and even it had it's drawbacks but I would heavily recommend it over a ACR.

Thanks guys for replying. I'll have to cross ACR off my list. Was reading about the DSA sa58 fal on another forum and said the accuracy was horrendous. Kind of wavering on the FAL. Is there something similar to the 6920 or the FAL?

Accuracy of the FAL is not "horrendous," that's just a silly statement. Is it as precise as a good bolt gun or an AR? No. Is it accurate for anything you'd realistically expect from a semi auto battle rifle? Yes.

Is the SCAR in the $2,000 range? That will put you in some rarified company if you don't want just another AR.

scar is over the 2500x mark ;( read reviews on it and it wasnt great. A lot more better designs than the older ar's is nice to see.

Colt 6940

Barrett Rec7

FNH Ps90 - a lot cheaper than I thought they would price it for once.

The SCAR is a pretty good platform, accurate, good ergonomics and the controls are pretty intuitive. A friend of mine has the SCAR-H, I've put quite a few rounds downrange with it. Price is the main drawback, that 'FNH' rollmark is quite pricey.

:P looking at the similar sizing fs2000 for 700+ more and the other guns for over 1000+ more its more even priced than those xD Yea, 2500 for the light and 3000 for the heavy +10% tax rate = 3300 X_X!

In .308/7.62, go with the DSA FAL if you want a solid, reliable, reasonably accurate "battle rifle", even if you don't plan on being in too many battles. In the last couple years there are more and more .308 variants so you have quite a wide selection, but the FAL is still the proven performer. Its not a hunting gun (lots of them in .308 too) but decades of experience in real battles with many nations' armies should tell you something.

It's out of production now, but I love my Bushmaster M17S Bullpup. It was originally designed with an eye towards military and LEO contracts.
Bullpup features long (22") barrel in shortover-all legth - good truck gun. More reliable than AR platform in a dirty environment. Decent accuracy, and uses AR magazines. One of the few well-balanced BP designs - not 'tail-heavy'.
Can use commercial .223Rem and 5.56X45 GI ammo.

Sorry bigdog57, that looks sick but seems like its gonna cost more than a arm or leg. Upstate what would you recommend from the DSAarms website? they list off like 15 different FALS with random stuff attached.
