Parachutist's Weapons Pack

I just bought a parachutist's weapons and equipment pack from Cheaper Than Dirt. The picture in the catalog (and online at http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/default.asp, and search for ZBQ-1081) wasn't very good, but I kinda liked the idea that I could have a wearable pack that would carry my AR-15 and other gear (ammo, scope, magazines, etc..) Well, now that I have received it I'm a little disappointed that there are no internal straps to hold gear in place, or any pockets of any kind. So, now I'm just happy to use it as a shooting mat. However, just to quench my curiosity, I wanted to ask if anybody has ever used one of these, or knows how to properly pack it?

It has three Vertical straps, and two horizontal straps. However, it has three horizontal buckles, and two vertical buckles. There's a strap that I don't know how or where to buckle-down, and it's driving me nuts. Please tell me how to buckle the darned thing up.

Jwise, are you talking about a cwie bag or a 1950 weapons bag??

Sounds like you have "the wrap" version. Shoot me a photo and I can tell you how to rig it. (Jumpmaster).

I seem to recall that ours had a zipper on it, and it connected with a metal doohicky that fastened to our stuff (God-it's been too long, amazing what one forgets). There were also straps that tied around our legs to fasten it for the jump. I wish I could be more help, but I bet you got yourself an older model.

It's a newer model, built around the AR-15 (barely fits the 16" barrel AR.) There's a picture (not a good one) at the link I listed above. It has no zippers, and when unfastened, lays flat to be used as a shooter's mat. It has shoulder straps to be carried as a pack.

Nope, tried the link and it doesn't go to exactly what you bought. What is the Nomenclature and where did you purchase it (From the Mil-Surlpus section??))

When you go to the site, "and search for ZBQ-1081" the pack should come up.

CTD/MilSurplus/Weapons accessories/OD case and shooter mat.

Sorry about the confusion.

If I'm not mistaken, that is the CWIE Bag (Container, weapons and individual eqipment bag). It was meant to be "bundled" and dropped attached to the jumper. You still need either a "red-ball" release device or a modified H-Harness complete with lowering line to properly rig it for jumping. The bag folds out basically as a mat and you strap the material inside the bag. Then the bag closes up like a christmas package and the flaps are secured. Then you place the harness with the single-point release mechanism or the modified H-Harness around it to complete the security. It was never meant to be "humped" from one place to the other. Basically, you jump, approx. 200 feet above the ground, you lower it. After activating a canopy release assmbly you get out of your parachute harness, open the CWIE bag and place your weapon into operation. Will also hold material not immediatley meant to be transported to another location - for example air-rigged .30 rounds for hot D.Z.'s; etc.

Ok, so you know what I've got- good. How do you secure a weapon and gear inside of the pack? Do you just throw everything in there? That seems a bit odd.

Do you know what that third strap and buckle are for? They seem out of place.

Give me a few and I'll pull out my packing stuff this weekend. If I recall, they were for external attachment of the container, not anything to do with the inside. Give me the weekend and I'll check.

I've got one of these CWIE bags as well, I thought it would have some kind of internal strap system to hold the gear in place. The thing is pretty close to useless for carrying gear around as it is...I was wondering if there was another piece of milsurp gear that works in conjunction with the CWIE to hold gear in place. Anybody know?

jwise and freedomlover- I don't know anything about those CWIE's but if you want a better set up, Eagle Industries makes a nice one. It's the same thing you have now but EI's has a muzzle guard and security straps to hold the rifle in place. I don't have one but I'm looking at one in The Blue Press catalog. It also has compartments for cleaning equipment and ammo. Kind of expensive though. $129.95
