Panhandler part II

"JackM, While I agree that getting law enforcement involved is a good idea when dealing with bad guys, you were talking about AGGRESSION by a bum. How about some advice on defending oneself? This is a gun forum, not the crocheting and macramé forum. Do you really expect that a true blue RKBA'er is going to "cry foul" to the cops first w/o rightfully defending oneself?

No flame intended, but I couldn't help it when my "liberal sewage leak" alarm went off.

Point well taken, but this is one of those situations where we will probably NOT give off the kind of vibes that lead to a physical attack. Tactically it is a sticky one, since it is hard to justify any use of force to maintain "personal space", my personal opinion, and one of the reasons that I am so familiar with this problem, is that everyone who carries a handgun should also train in unarmed fighting. The physical confidence (regardless of size) will help deter attack. And the fighting skills will help clear your space sufficiently to allow you to utilize your weapon should the need arise. I actually meant that even though the bad guy may have been no threat to me, I always try to consider who he may target after I leave. Thanks

The Insights SVT class is good for this kind of stuff. Hamilton has a nice shtick.

For the TX crowd, both www.sdsinent.com
and www.krtraining.com bring the Insights folks in.

In fact, I'm taking Intensive Handgun in a couple of weeks at KR . Join me! There is also a kubotan course the day before.

Watch me spend a lot of money!

Seriously, these sort of courses go over the contingencies and actions so you avoid trouble with such encounters. You don't end up stuttering and saying DUH. I've used it a few times since the course and worked fine.

Even scared away an enraged Chihuauhua in San Antonio with the right attitude and karma. :)

Hey, Glenn - I'll finally get to meet you in person it seems - I'm also down for intensive handgun at the end of the month.

Man, I'm spooked - I wanted to take Advanced Tactics; but they're not running it - I want to take an advanced course this year, and that (and Comp. Pistol) are the only ones available.

I've watched the upper echelon of IPSC shooters, and fear I'm at the other end of the skill scale. All these people talking about 1 inch groups at 25 yards - I'm grateful to hit a chest-sized target at 25 yards.

In short, I may be in over my head. Looking forward to it though!!

1500-2000 rounds in 2 days - am I nuts taking it with my (modded) Kimber Compact?

Battler.

Battler - I doubt there will be that level of shooting skill at this course. One inch groups at 25 yards with a handgun is very difficult. Very few IPSC shooters, even the pros, can't accomplish this. Don't be intimidated. Go and have fun, and learn as much as you can. Bring some cloth tape with you to wrap around any sore spots on your hands if you are not used to shooting this many rounds over a weekend. Even my hands would get sore shooting that many rounds through a compact 1911.

where in Tx, what's the cosr and how do I sign up? [Supposing I can afford it on my limited 'salery' of 'nothing'.

Santana:

$300; the real cost will be all the ammo :)

Nad:

What do you mean by cloth tape? Where can I get it? The real pain I get from shooting a lot is from the kimber grooved trigger rubbing my fingertip, and thumb from the safety.

Okay, 1" at 25 yards I knew to be far-fetched; but there's some serious double-tapping skills out there. I hope the ranges are kept at 15 yards - or at any speed I'll start missing a lot.

I'm also fearing on fitness grounds - how straight can I aim with all the running around/one hand shooting?

But it'll be fun playing with the big boys :)

Glenn, taking IST next year in Harrisburg is my first priority. Gonna try and take their handgun course next year as well, gonna limber up the S&W M342 again. :)

One thing that I have gleaned from Insights's limited tactics lectures in CQC, DFK and GDR is to KEEP MOVING. I imagine they go into this in more detail in IST, but I remember them saying, if you stop and talk with them, that allows them to get positioning on you (e.g., if there are more than one, they can surround you).

I ran into this situation in a sim scenario where I decided to stand my ground and duke it out with the guy in the FIST suit and didn't notice the guy coming up behind me with the knife. Oops. Should have beat feet. :(

Also, combine body language (another favorite Insights lecture) -- hands out in the "setting boundaries" position with the firm verbal command of "no thank you!" will do the trick. Although I really do like Mr. Donath's "flee for life" line. :)

And the wallet. After reading MacYoung/Pfouts's "Safe In The City", I went to Las Vegas and bought myself a money clip. Basically, they outlined a scam where goblins would look for people getting out of cabs -- the people would flip out their wallets to pay the cabbie and the goblins would grab the wallet and it's off to the races. If you're a tourist with your luggage in the cab, you're faced with a hard choice -- lose your wallet, or if you give chase, you may lose your luggage too. So carry a money clip with some cash; if they grab that, they get some money -- but not your driver's license, CCL, credit cards, etc.

Lastly, since we're relating scams, there was one in Philadelphia where the guy would come up to you and tell you that he wanted to get from Center City to Norristown but he only had $2.50 and it cost $3-4 to take the regional rail to Norristown. The problem with this scam was that if you know the SEPTA train system, you only need $2.30 to get to Norristown -- you skip the regional rail line by taking the blue line to the 69th street terminal and then get on the Norristown high speed line. Two tokens, at $1.15 apiece, will do the trick. It was priceless to see their reactions when you told them that they already had enough money to get to their mythical destination....

Battler,

Cloth tape is the old style medical tape...white, cloth..usually on a metal roll with a metal sleeve over it...

Any of you other San Antonians ever go to "A Place to Shoot" off of Moursund? It's about 2 miles or so outside 410 on the left..decent range.
