Painting stocks revisited - heat issues?

I'd like to paint my AKM's and my Romak-3's furniture black. I'd rather paint it because everytime I get the money together for a black plastic furniture set, there always seems to be something better to spend the money on (an ammo sale, mags, whatever).

I can paint it with high-heat paint, but I'd like to put a couple 3-4 coats of clearcoat over the finished product to prevent future chalking. Depending on my shooting style any given day, sometimes those handgaurds can get pretty hot.

Anything out there I can clearcoat the painted handgaurds with that will tolerate heat?

I saw a clear coated AK-47 fore end and handguard blister and turn black after a couple or three (30 rd) mags of full auto fire. Heat resistant paint might be better, but it is made for metal and I don't know what would happen if the wood underneath got hot.

Interesting point. Ever wonder what's in the heat resistant paint that makes it heat resistant? Maybe that's where I'll find my answer to a clear coat....
