Painting a wood stock?

Thinking of painting the stock on a rifle I haven't even bought yet. Looking at ADL in synthetic or Savage equivalent in wood. Will paint either. Is painting the wood stock a problem?

Thanks, -Coop

No, but...

I'd go with the syntheric anyway. They are less effected by atmospheric changes, and will look better after you paint it. Also, by painting a wooden stock, you destroy the only reason most still use real wood, the way it looks.

Yuck! IMHO, I think that that would look horrible!

To answer your question, though, you shouldn't run into any difficulties...strip, sand, paint.

YUCK!

Strip , sand, PRIME, paint. ?

I have seen some target stocks that were painted. Some works of art and some pretty yucky.

Priming bout necessary to cover existing grain or laminations on a wood one.

To me, wood is beautiful.

Dupli-Color makes a black spray on truck bed liner in spray cans. I've refininished a couple of really rough wood stocks with them and they have turned out very nice. Rough up the stock with 80-100 grit paper and put on two or three light coats. The finnish can be further sealed with a light coat of semi-gloss laquer. The 870 I finnished looks just like a 'glass stock and 1/32nd the cost.:D
