Pact with *&*

I just read over in Legal how the company is suffering.

If the company is sold to people who agree not to uphold the contract, are we all willing to buy the new company guns to support them?

Negative.

Even though it breaks my heart that the manufacturer of the finest firearms I own is a traitor.. I will not give in. They may sweat it out and file bankruptsy for all I care. They must pay the price for strikin' a deal with the devil.

If the company is sold by the current owners, and the new owners trash that so-called agreement, I wouldn't have a problem buying their merchandise.

In fact, I'd _LOVE_ it if it went public - I wouldn't mind holding some stock, and having a vote in how things are run...

Maybe.
If they were to totally and publicly disavow the contract.
Donate $25 million to prominent gun rights organizations.
Offer a 75% rebate on any new S&W purchased.
I might reconsider.

Not particularly. I'm not very fond of the Sigma series myself.

I would continue to buy old S&W revolvers (used of course) because I believe they are the best quailty pistol you can buy. I shed a tear everytime I see a nicely-kept revolver (with a pinned barrel) and I can not afford it.

If S&W came under new ownership, I'd be hard-pressed (still) to purchase any product. They would have to go a LONG way to prove themselves to me. I can't tell you how hurt I was to hear of it to begin with.

Despite my love for S&W pistols, I would have serious reservations about buying a Sigma -- agreement or no agreement (even if the agreement never happened). FUD.

If S&W were bought out by someone who repudiated the government agreement, I would send the CEO a letter of congratulations and go out and buy one of their brand new .357 revolvers.

I've been thinking about this for some time and I believe it's in our best interest to keep supporting S&W.

Sounds odd, I know, but by letting them go under with this boycott, we are removing a very large firearms manufacturer and that is exactly what the anti-gun side wants. Without S&W, how many are left?

Sure, we can all talk about them turning traitor, and I certainly don't agree with their signing the HUD agreement, but doesn't destroying the company aid and abett the enemy? With them gone, isn't the anti case that much stonger? Won't this give them that much more propaganda?

Which is better? Having S&W continue to make and sell guns, or loosing a potential resource for the fight?

I'm at a loss, but I think I would look closely at a new revolver for home defense.

When Reason Fails.....

If Lyin' Ed very publicly and angrily denounced the entire fed.gov, then took the contract and used it for TP, then shoved said contract in Andy C's face, then dropped trou and allowed every gun owner (not just people who happen to own guns) to get in one good kick to his nads...

...I might buy an N-frame, just because they're such damn good guns. But I won't until all those conditions are satisfied.

I don't know about you. But looks like we're gonna make an example of S&W for the rest of the manufacturers. I'd rather loose S&W than have another company sign on with Slick Willie. Let this be a lesson to all gun manufactuers that we ain't gonna have none of this crap!

I disagree, Vaughn. If we support Smith & Wesson, then every other gun manufacturer is going to see that knuckling under to the Federales isn't such a bad thing. Then where will the average gun owner be?

Much as I want a S&W 696, we're going to have to use Smith & Wesson as example of what happens when you sell out your customers--to keep Glock, SIG, H&K, Taurus, Walther, and all the others in line.

Thing is, if I won the lotto tomorrow (which will be surprising in itself, since I don't have a ticket...), and bought S&W, and turned it into S,W&B, would _I_ deserve to be boycotted?

I don't think so. If the company does a turnaround, support it. Just like with a dog - If it takes a crap in the living room, discipline it. If it does good, reward it.

Bogie, if you bought *&*, I would hope that your first executive decision would be to nullify the agreement. If not, then yes, regardless of who owns the company, the boycott should stand.

Sorry. :(

Why do some of us feel the need to agonize so much over the fate of S&W?
Sooner or later every company goes out of business. Some do so because of bad leadership decisions. Some because of a bad general economy, overwhelming competition in the marketplace or simply the inability to produce a product that appeals to the consumer.
S&W has a distinguished history, but it's not the first company with one that went belly-up. Nor will it be the last. Colt, Glock, HK , Ruger, etc. will all eventually pass from the scene.
If their departure leaves a void, someone else will eventually come along to fill it.
Nature abhors a vacuum.
I feel sorry for the rank and file workers of S&W. Their lives are being disrupted because of management stupidity.
Otherwise, I don't really give them much thought. Sure, they make a couple of guns I'd like to own, but there are more guns out there that I'd like to have than I'll ever be able to buy.
As far as I'm concerned, S&W is dead & stinkin'!
I'm not holding my breath waiting for their resurrection.

Coinneach,
400 years is certainly an impressive record. I hope Beretta is around for another 400, but in a world of pine trees, even redwoods eventually die.
