PACT Professional Chrono......BIGTIME rant......

Two days ago, I got my PACT chrono from Midway. I'm packing it up to be returned.

I've always loved my PACT scale, and the powder dispenser, and the second scale, and well....you get the picture. I expected the same quality in the chrono.

I have no problem with function. In fact, it seemed to be extremely accurate, and the ballistic computer was neat, if not up-to-date. No, no data in it for the Sierra 175gr Matchking. Not really much of a problem.

The problem came with fit and finish. First, the wire socket to the keypad wasn't plugged in properly. The case was poorly fitted (cutout for the LCD display was uneven, and the LCD wasn't evenly located). The circuit board was completely exposed in the rear of the unit (approximately 1.5"X4" cutout for the jacks). Not just dust, but small rocks and Hyundais could accidentally get into the delicate circuitry. The jacks felt like they were going to break off when I plugged in the sensor leads. The printer was slow and extremely noisy....I though the unit was about to die. The cutoff strip for the printer was simply a formed plastic lip that DID NOT allow for the paper to be torn off evenly. A 2-cent metal blade or teeth molded into the plastic would solve that.

All in all, The chrono is accurate, but the fit and finish are more reminicent of a $75.00 chrono, not a $279.00 unit. I've lost some respect for PACT.

That sure isn't up to PACT's usual standards. You might call Midway to open a box on another and see if it is in the same condition. Midway will usually ship another item even before you return one if you have a problem with it. They seem to trust us gun nuts.

Man thats terrible George. I am really happy with my Shooting Chrony F-1 and it has lots better worksmanship than what you are describing, and it was only either $64 or $69(I can't remember which)from Midway, plus it has a 5 year no questions asked warranty. I know that it does not have the programs like PACT has but what I do is use my HP Pavilion for the computer work and the F-1 for the vleocities.

I absolutely love my F-1 "Jesus" Chrony. (It was raised from the dead)

I drilled the front part of my first Chrony with my .223; got the back part of the replacement with a .400 Cor-Bon. Disassembled the two shot-up Chrony's; put the two good parts together, and now I have a perfect Chrony.

Don't forget that Chrony will provide resurrection services when (not if) you shoot your Chrony. I love mine, just which I'd gotten the masterbeta(r) version...

How to set up a chronograph.

Put your rifle on the rest (you WILL use a rest), aimed at the bullseye on your target. Don't move the rifle.

Take the bolt out, or otherwise make it so you can look through the bore (dentist's mirror works too...)

Have your bud take your chronograph out about 10-15 feet or so, and adjust it to where it's close.

Have him put his hand in the midpoint where you want the bullet to go. Look down the bore. You should see nothing but hand. Move the chrony until you see nothing but hand. Then, using just the tip of a finger in the "bullet flyover area" that you want, move the chrony until all you see is the finger in the center of the bore. You're ready to rock.

You can do it faster than I can tell you how. One person can do this, but it requires trips back and forth, and a red ball or something to hang in the "flyover zone."
