PITTSBURGH (August 2, 2000 3:55 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - A judge ruled Wednesday that a man charged with killing three people and wounding two others in a shooting spree at two fast-food restaurants is competent to stand trial.
Ronald Taylor, 39, had little response when the judge asked him if he understood the charges against him, including homicide, arson and hate crimes.
On March 1, police said, Taylor set his apartment on fire and fatally shot a maintenance man in anger over a broken door. He then allegedly went to two nearby fast-food restaurants, where he shot four more people. Two of those victims died.
Police said they believed the shootings were racially motivated.
A psychiatrist who had previously determined that Taylor wasn't competent to understand the charges against him or aid in his defense said Wednesday that the defendant had improved enough to do both.
