Excerpt: PHILADELPHIA (KYW) Police and prosecutors concerned with a spate of killings in the city begged the public Monday for more help identifying murderers.

District Attorney Lynne M. Abraham vowed that her office will protect witnesses, even if it means sending a moving van to their home to take them to safety the day they come forward.

“We cannot only move you out of the city, we can move you out of the state; we can move you across the country,” Abraham said.

Within the past eight days there have been 21 homicides in Philadelphia, including three in the late-night and early morning hours after the prosecutor made her appeal Monday. ...

... <snip> ...

(Mayor) Street has declared the violence throughout the city a crisis and as a result has ordered the full review of police department policies and has suggested a full moratorium on the issuing of gun permits.

In addition, Street has requested a meeting with Governor Ed Rendell to talk about possible new gun legislation.

Help us save our city and we'll move you out of the city for your own protection. Hilarious, but sad admission.

So, let me get this right ... there is a spate of shooting deaths on our fair city streets; therefore, we'll just stomp on the rights of the law-abiding firearms owners, i.e., those citizens that don't do this kind of thing, uh ... by definition, I think, eh?

Right. Okay. I think I got it.

Philadelphia should just succeed from Pa. and annex itself to NJ.
(and I'm only half joking here)
IIRC, one of the weird quirks about Pa. and it's being a commonwealth instead of a state, is that it's cities can do that.(or at least they could at one time). <Erie Pa. threated to succeed and annex itself to Ontario a number of years ago when Pa was going to ban metal studded snowtires.>

Anyhow, sounds like the same bedwetting liberal clap-trap every single one of the liberal bedwetting hell-holes spouts.

Philadelphia is probable the most volatile City in the Country right now.

There has beeen a ton of stuff happen that should have been on the National news but got hushed up because it could have caused major problems within the black community.

Mayor John Street embodies everything that is wrong with his own community.

Doesn't PA have "shall issue" right to carry? If so, how can one place have a moratorium on gun permits? And "secede" I believe is the way it's spelled. Would make perfect sense for Philly to become part of NJ, but unfortunately it ain't gonna happen. That cesspool of a city needs the taxes and resources of the rest of the state to subsidize its failure.

Philly Phailure... Yeah I have been here 5 years... street is worthless. We lost the war on potholes and he is a blantant criminal exposed right before the election and still got voted in. The whole city knows there is one reason he is in office still.

an interesting question is inherent in the following

The above mentioned question is as follows.

Why is it that supposedly "smart" people, Mayor Street forinstance, seem unable to tell the difference between law abiding citizens, who happen to be gun owners, and or are licensed to carry concealed, and criminals, whose possession of firearms under any circumstances, is violative of law? Might it be that they can tell the difference, but what with media having entered the lists, they find it inconvenient to deal with the facts of the matter, or even to speak thereof? Why is it that this so often seems to be the case, or is it that push having come to shove, elected things revert to type and lie? Asking the question saddens me, however given the antics of so many in public office, the question must be asked. How will it be answereed remains to be seen.

NEWS RELEASE
PHILADELPHIA MURDERS NO REASON TO CLAMP DOWN ON HONEST CITIZENS, SAYS SAF
A wave of homicides in Philadelphia should not be used as an excuse for Mayor John Street to advocate clamping down on the self-defense rights of thousands of law-abiding citizens, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) said today.

"When the Philadelphia Daily News asked Mayor Street whether the homicides were related to the 28,000 legally-issued concealed carry licenses in the city, he sidestepped the question," noted SAF Founder Alan M. Gottlieb. "Instead, he argues that there are just too many handguns in the city.

"That's a bogus response to a legitimate question," Gottlieb said, "and it lies at the very heart of the gun control debate. It's typically not law-abiding citizens who gun people down on the street in drug deals, or who are the killers in drive-by shootings or acts of domestic violence. Yet anti-gunners like Mayor Street are quick to argue that the only way to stop the criminal misuse of firearms is to punish people who aren't even remotely responsible for the crimes."

Gottlieb concurred with State Rep. Dwight Evans, a Philadelphia Democrat, who told a newspaper that, "It's not like you're going to pass a bill and this is going to go away."

"Evans is right," Gottlieb observed. "If Mayor Street thinks he's going to suddenly make street violence disappear by denying law-abiding citizens their right to self-defense, he's sadly mistaken. This is not a problem that can be easily solved by eliminating the means of personal protection for thousands of Philadelphia residents, turning those people against you in the process. Gun owners are typically the most ardent supporters of law enforcement efforts to crack down on crime.

"Tired rhetoric about ‘too many guns on the streets' is not going to prevent a single crime in Philadelphia or anywhere else," Gottlieb concluded. "Absent the city's ability to round up the perpetrators and hold them accountable, Mayor Street's approach is to shift responsibility to legally-armed citizens who had nothing to do with any of these crimes. That's not simply wrong, it is dangerous."

The Second Amendment Foundation is the nation's oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 600,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control. SAF has previously funded successful firearms-related suits against the cities of Los Angeles; New Haven, CT; and San Francisco on behalf of American gun owners, a lawsuit against the cities suing gun makers & an amicus brief & fund for the Emerson case holding the Second Amendment as an individual right.

Query. How many legal permit-holding, legally owned firearms or CCW holders were involved in the weeks deathtoll?

Precisely the question Mayor Street sidestepped.

Let's see how long it is before Street decides to issue a statement that his police will not recognize a PA handgun permit and anyone carrying a gun on the street will be subject to being detained (and likely their gun(s) confiscated, tested, damaged and left to rust in a warehouse).

Philly has one or more murderers running around killing people and the Mayor's only thought is to prevent people from applying for an effective means of self-defense?

But I guess we should expect this kind of muddy thinking from the only city in the nation that has tried to bomb a building to get domestic terrorists (and burned down a whole city block doing it too).

Philly has been turning into a cesspool since the 1970's. Between mob influence from across the river and the unions holding the city by the cajones, it's a wonder anything ever gets done there.

They didn't just try; they DID bomb a house in a VERY densely packed residential neighborhood and burned down an entire city block leaving hundreds of innocent people homeless and devoid of all their worldly possessions. The way the MOVE incident was handled was a disgrace and if there was any justice Wilson Goode would be serving a life sentence.

Regardless, Philly has become a crime infested craphole of epic proportions. I feel far more safe walking the streets of New York City without a weapon than I do when I'm in Philly and carrying. And now Mayor Street would remove that protection should he get his way. Perfect...

In-so-far as ILLEGAL activities were concerned, the likely answer is ZERO. As to Philadelphia being "mob ridden" I could never quite remember if it was the mobsters that came to be known as The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight, or if it was the Philadelphia Police Dept.

As to the rest of it, your reference to Philadelphia not recognizing a state issued carry permit or license, that sort of rubbish has been going on in NYC, where I lived for many years, since I can't remember when. Other than that Philadelphia seems to have long considered itrself something special, and not really paart of Pennsylvania, until it comes time to line up at the money shoot. Then they magically become part of Pennylvania, the largest city therein.

As to Mayor Goode, he should have been taken out and hung for what he and his administration did. Talk about WAR CRIMES. I expect, re your reference to mayoral side-stepping, that Street will continue therewith, unless someone manages to corner him.
