PA CCW for non residents

Does anyone here have a PA CCW but is not a PA resident?

I'm trying to get one through Mifflin County, but the sheriff has indicated that it is illegal.

Can anyone point me to the specific section of the law that I can show him that allows CCW issue to non PA residents?

What makes this all the more aggravating is that the sheriff has known me for over 10 years, and has known my family for more than 30 years...

Mike,

Go to www.packing.org and follow the threads to Pennsylvania. FYI, Pennsylvania definitely issues non-resident CCW permits. Despite a single state law, each county has its own procedures; some are very cooperative and others are quite difficult. "Packing" will help you identify the best candidates -- there are several individual reports of immediate successes (including Adams County/Gettysburg, if memory serves) -- that are proximate to our northern Virginia area.

Also, I believe Virginia - Pennsylvania CCW reciprocity remains pending. Like many politicized processes, however, it is moving forward at glacial speed.

Hope this helps and best regards -- Roy

You can thank our AG Mike Fisher for the slow reciprocity. Under PA law the AG has the power to enter into reciprocity agreements with other states. But since Fisher is an anti, he doesn't lift a finger....

I got my Non-resident permit in July. The short time it took to get it, made the waiting period for my Mass. resident permit seem like decades.

Mike,
It was in Milford county. I had my brother fill out the application and bring it down with half(?) of the fee. When it was okayed I drove down took my picture, payed the rest of the fee(I think it was $22.50 total), and drove away THREE MINUTES later.

RWK,
Are you saying Pa. is going to honor Va. CCW permits or they do now? I am stationed here in Va. and have my permit, but I am from Pa., I go home quite often. I tried to contact someone there but I have not recieved a response.

Smitty 21,

I have received two e-mails from the Virginia State Police -- and there is also confirmation on www.packing.org -- that Virginia and Pennsylvania are attempting to work out CCW reciprocity. This does not mean an accord is certain to be bilaterally confirmed or there is an established schedule for an agreement, only that it being considered by both Commonwealths.

Hope this information helps.

Mike,

It should be a mechanical process to get an out of state permit in PA. I bought a holster from a gentleman associated with the Sheriff’s department in Wilkes Barr, who was offering to help with the paperwork.

I'll dig the info out and post it this weekend.

Kris,

Do you perhaps mean Pike County? There isn't a Milford County in Pennsylvania, but the town of Milford is the county seat of Pike County.

Robb,

When did you get your permit from McKean? I called them about a year ago, and they said they were no longer doing it by mail.

My GA permit got me a PA permit at the Gettysburg Courthouse in about 15 minutes.
FYI the applicant in front of me asked about the rules for CCW and self-defense. He was told to just use his common sense. Was it Einstein who said nothing is as uncommon as common sense?

Ken,

Thanks, that's good to know! I have friends who are moving to Gettysburg in a few weeks, so I'll probably be up there in the near future, hopefully when the Sheriff's office is open.

Got one from Mariposa county a few years back. They made me drive down to pick it up.
