PA buying a handgun

My mothers friend wants a handgun in PA I'm from VA. I told her I would find out about the process in PA. What do you have to do? What forms of ID? Is there a waiting period? Thanks for your help.

I believe all you need is a drivers license or similar ID. There is no waiting period. The gun shop will run an instant check and you can leave the store with the gun as long as everything checks out.

Well hell, I know you know here in VA, there is no waiting, no NCIS check, no nothing... expcept for CCW....

In PA... here is the rundown on handguns:

Permit to Purchase? NO
Regsitration of Handgun? NO
Owner Licensing? NO
Permit to Carry? Only for CCW
Waiting Period? NO
NCIS Check? YES
Record of Sale? YES

So basically, other than filling out the form, and the FFL making the call to the ATF, there isn't much to it!;)

Aint it great to live in PA! You walk into the store, pick the firearm you want, fill out a form, wait for them to make a call, pay and leave with your gun. I have gone to the store and walked out with a new gun in 15 minutes. Your moms friend should have no problems buying a gun as long as the call to the ATF goes through ok.

Admittedly, I haven't bought a handgun in a few months, but I think there is still a requirement for an NICS check at all FFL gun shops, that is unless the purchase is from a private party.

(I doubt that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) would be interested in the initial purchase by any means. Now if it was used in a crime at the Navy base, maybe. ;) )

Ha, ;) And you know, even though the source I got that from said no, I actually stoped in a firearm retailer today and sure enough, they did do one, and it's a $2 charge directly to the state. And that was for a shotgun.

If you plan on using the pistol for hunting you have to have a Sportsman permit from the county treasurer.

I know this is an old thread but I have a question that would pretty much end my research before buying a firearm and hopefully doesn't prevent me from doing so!

Do you need to have a job of employment for when filling out the papers when buying a handgun? I pretty much work at home so this is the only issues I can't seem to find an answer to. Or it does it not matter at all? Just get a background check will do?

Thanks in advance.

No, there are no questions regarding your employment on the Federal forms, but some states may have questions about it on their separate forms.

You can check the particulars for your individual state here: http://www.handgunlaw.us/

TY for that link.

I read through it and stopped at the part where it states; "Names, Addresses and Phone #’s of 2 references." for applying for a permit. I'm kind of dumbfounded on that one. What would be ideal for references?

Thanks in advance, again.

EDIT: I recently came across a PA gun permit form. On it stated that I needed #2 references and says may not be family members. I am guessing I have to give friend references? It's the little things that seem to confuse me, sorry. :o

Are you talking about buying a firearm or getting a concealed carry permit? We have a bunch of PA members here who can answer your question, but I didn't think PA required all that for only a purchase.

I think your best course of action is to simply go to your local gun shop and ask them what is required for a purchase. I'm not sure, but I don't see why they couldn't also let you read the actual forms required for a purchase.

Yea, it was for CCP. I understand the question about references now, though. But, yea, I will be heading to a shop in the next month or so and will ask questions.

Appreciated your assistance. :D
