Pennsylvania Alert! October 17, 2000

Calling it legislation to expressly permit the Pennsylvania State
Police to maintain a limited handgun sales database, state
representative Dan Frankel (D-23rd District) has introduced HB 2811,
legislation that will make it legal for Pennsylvania law enforcement
officials to register every handgun that is legally transferred in
Pennsylvania!

The purpose of this legislation is not only to register guns, but
also to protect the State Police from a pending grassroots lawsuit
that would force them to give up the illegal firearms registry they
have been maintaining for years!

When Pennsylvania's Uniform Firearms Act was changed more than five
years ago, language was added that made it expressly illegal for the
State Police, or any official, to maintain a record of handgun
transfers -- but the State Police have been doing it illegally ever
since. They say that their illegal records are not a registry
because every gun in Pennsylvania isn't required to be in it --
only those that are transferred by dealers! There is a pending
lawsuit by grassroots gun owners that will challenge the illegal
police registry.

State officials know the police registry is illegal, and are trying
to defeat Pennsylvania's gun owners before they can get to court to
prove it!

Here's what to do:

Contact your Pennsylvania state representative and state senator
today and tell them you oppose any legislation that permits public
officials to register your guns. Also tell them that you want the
State Police to stop registering guns now. Here's how to reach
your state legislators:

State Representatives:

Write to your state representative at Pennsylvania House of
Representatives, State Capitol, Harrisburg, PA 17120-0028, and call
them at the Capitol switchboard at 717-787-2372.

State Senators:

Write to your state senator at Senate of Pennsylvania, State
Capitol, Harrisburg, PA 17120-0028, and call them at the Capitol
switchboard at 717-787-5920.

Other candidates:

Use the candidate contact information located at http://www.gunowners.org/spa0100.htm to urge these folks to
publicly oppose HB 2811 and make an issue of it with their
opponents.

You can use the sample letters that follow. If you do not know who
your state senator and representative are, you can look them up in
the GOA Legislative Action Center. Simply go to http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm and select PA in the Guide to
States section, then enter your zipcode.

State legislators have scheduled a session *after* election day to
do the dirty-work they wouldn't dare do before you go to the polls
-- contact them today and tell them you've had your fill of gun
control in Pennsylvania!

----- Pre-written Messages -----

Dear Representative,

I am writing to ask you to oppose Rep. Dan Frankel's legislation
-- HB 2811 -- that would make it legal for Pennsylvania officials to
register handguns. Pennsylvania's present law was written to
protect gun owners from dangerous and dishonest public officials who
would abuse lists of guns and gun owners for their devious purposes.
I want that law to be made stronger, not weaker. I also want you to
put pressure on the State Police to end their illegal handgun
registry.

Please let me know what you intend to do. Gun Owners of America
will keep me informed of how you vote on these issues.

Sincerely,

I wrote a couple of letters but do you realize how broke I would be if I wrote to them all? That's why I encourage all other Pennsylvanians to write too! This concerns our rights here in this wonderful state!

I ask you not to just sit back and think, "Others will take care of this. I don't need to do anything."

We all need to write!

What does email cost you Shin tao.
No really Im glad your writing.
The best way for the anti's to get things done is take one state and couple cities and focus all their money their with adds and members and contributions to the right reps well be so busy in other area's it will be nearly impossible for us to counter as an effective force.
Ive already forwarded this alert to a few groups.
It would be nice if someone would post the NRA version of the alert ,I mean certainly they are covering this...

ruger45,

email is easily ignored. In fact it is usually just counted pro vs con. Hand written letters and typed letters sent via snail mail is more effective--but back it up with email or back up email with written letter.

What madison said PLUS if you went to that PA Alert GOA page that WAGCEVP posted, you will also notice there ARE not email addresses for the 245 possible reps and senators. You will also see why 245 + .33 (stamp) = $80.85 is quite a hefty sum.

Good points
just asking sorry.
I make a point of writing my US reps all the time I also think they find that more annoying since I suppose on some level their required to write back.
After my fourth postcard provided by GOA
about the Hostettler amendment my Congressmen
didnt write me back with any more exscuses
about why not to support it.
I think he was annoyed but he voted for it.

Is so sick of me. He never writes me back anymore. I send him about 2-3 emails a week and 4-6 letters a month. He used to respond but haven't done so in the past two months.
