P99 / Sw99

LAst week I had an opportunity to spend a day and a half with a certified examiner. I was very keen as I have read many of the posts about differences in the SW 99 and P99. We disassembled 2 SW and 3 P99's. From detailed examination, some with a stereo microscope and lots of time with vernier calipers and other precision tools. We found NO differences at all ( all 9 mm). The finishing was the same and tool marks led us to conclude that at least some of the parts in both came from a common supplier.

There is apparentlly full parts interchangeability and any differences in finishing were undetectable. Perhaps the German ones are better because the Black Forest Elves provide some magic that is not included in the S&W copy, but it certainly not obvious either from a detrailed stripping or in performance.

I don't suppose you noticed that the SW99 has a stainless steel slide, and the P99 has a carbon steel slide? Thats one difference.
Or that the SW99 is 7.125" OAL, and the P99 is 7" OAL? Or that the SW99 weighs 29.4oz. and the P99 weighs 29oz.? Since it appears that you can't read calipers or a scale accurately, i'll pass on your opinion of their respective quality.
BTW: It IS the Black Forest Elves that make the P99 better.

Project was

Analysis of internal parts only, like all of the mechanical partsd as opposded to the major assemblies. It has to do with a lawsuit in whici there is some controversy about the parts interchangeability. I have no idea who the litigants are.

The parts in the frame, theoretically, should be the same, becasue they both come from Walther Germany. The frame is shaped a little different, but the internals of the frame should be the same.

When you get to the slide and barrel, that is where the differences really come to light.

As far as the slide and barrel from a P99 going on a SW99, I would think that it could be done because the frames are very similar, but I've never tried.
