P99 Question

I just got back from the range and had an interesting (hopefully not common) problem with my P99. After 20 rounds I had what appeared to be a 2 round burst with one squeeze of the trigger. After clearing the gun and counting rounds thats exactly what happened. I then loaded 4 rounds in the magazine and tried again, same thing. Cleared the gun and had 2 rounds left. I tried it with just two rounds, same thing...Now I'm thinking to myself what a cool thing it would be to have a "2 round burst option" on my P99, but I'm thinking this is not quite safe or correct. Has anyone of my fellow P99 owners, or any auto-loader owner, had this problem?? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide..

Although I have never experienced this problem that you are having, there may be a plausible explanation. The P99 is designed to have a quick reset in SA, which means you barely have to release the trigger to be able to fire another round. This is great for double taps. What may be happening is that you are squeezing the trigger then slightly releasing it enough to reset it after it fires then resuming to squeeze. This is probably what is causing your "2 round bursts." Try to quickly take your finger off the trigger after each shot and see if that will remedy the problem. If it doesn't then it is something wrong with the gun and you should contact Walther. If it does, you probably just need to get used to the P99's unique (a good unique) trigger.

Safe shooting.

Ditto trigger control. The P99 has a very short reset in SA mode, and it's very fast. How long have you had the gun? If you're new to the P99, that would explain it.

26point2, the p99 <atleast mine> has a trigger reset of about 4mm, which would potentially give you the "symptom" that you are receiving. i would say to spend more time learning the trigger...snapcaps will help some, but you'll have to reset the striker manually. it's a sweet gun, enjoy and shoot it well.

I've had the gun for about a month, but only have shot 100 or so rounds thru it. I guess I need a little more time with it. I love it so far. Although if I can master the two round burst I think I may love it a little more, if I don't get kicked off the range for it...They sorta frown on rapid fire at the local range here...

Thanks for the info!!!

I'm sure the fellas that run the range probably know exactly what's going on... you probably don't need to say a word. But if not, they'll undoubtedly understand if you had to explain. Don't sweat it.

My recommendation would be to shoot only 50 rounds, 100 tops, at the range on any given day. Load 5 in a mag and shoot them. Evaluate while you load the next 5. This gives your arms a chance to rest, and you're not as 'fired up' (no pun intended) because you have a chance for a breather between mags. Pace yourself. Count to five between shots. Don't feel as though you have to rush it. It's your time, your ammo and your lane. Make it an art... not a relay race. :D Before you know it, your groups will get tighter and tighter until the center of the target disappears.

Good luck!

From another P99 owner I know exactly what you are going through.

I have a similar thing happen to me almost ever time I go to the range. I almost always fire my first two shots of the day really quickly. You take that nice long DA trigger pull and then expect the next one to be the same and before you move your finger at all you've taken another shot. After the first magazine I'm fine with it, but it's that second shot is almost always a suprise.

Something to work on in the future.

I have only had something like that happen to me with a Beretta. I was getting three-round bursts, but to be fair I was shooting a 93R.:D I haven't been able to get "burst fire" out of my P99 Military though.;)

I've never had that happen with my P99, but I did have it happen on a colt .45 with a 1.5lb trigger. It was so light that if you weren't careful the recoil from the first shot would cause just enough movement of the trigger finger to fire again. It actually grouped pretty good that way, but it wasn't something I really want a defensive pistol to do.
