P99 Illegal in Massachusetts?

Greetings to those in the People's Republic of Massachusetts from the People's Republic of New Jersey. I picked up a Walther P-99 .40 today, and on the outside of the box is a red sticker that reads "NOTICE - This handgun has not been tested for compliance with Massachusetts law. It is NOT TO BE SOLD in Massachusetts." Is this for real?! Does your state actually have an approval list of the handguns that can be legally sold?! Dang, and I thought Jersey was bad!

Here in Mao-tse-chusetts they have passed a huge, ill-written, uninformed set of laws.If you would like a look at how silly things are getting you could go to www.goal.org and se for yourself. What the package is talking about is that guns that are to be sold in Ma have to go through torture tests (dropping, heating etc, ) to rule out "junk" guns. It is unclear who is supposed to pay for the testing, how to perform it, etc. Some companies have not got around to doing this or have decided not to. My state makes me puke.

Greetings Gus- That must be an older P-99. The Walther P-99 is very much legal in Massachusetts in both 9mm and .40 S&W.

jnsn is correct...guns must past all sorts of crazy safety tests before they can be certified for sale here. Some notables I can think of that are "illegal" to sell as new in MA are Wilsons, certain Kimbers and Springfield 1911's. If they were in the state prior to the new laws that went into effect they are legit.(someone please correct me if I'm wrong) Nice eh? Guess I'm never going to see a new Wilson unless he decides to donate one to be destroyed buy the state.

Can you guys believe that this is the state where the "shot that was heard around the world" was fired?? Lexington Green is 15-20 minutes from my house.......ugh

Bad news guys, other states are picking up on theses "consumer protection" laws. The People's Republic of California enacted a similiar law this last legislative year. I've read the thing and it will restrict a lot of guns. An interesting point is LEO guns are exempt. For example one rule is a semiauto must have a manual safety which means my Sig 226 is a "junk" gun. BUT, since it is my duty gun it is exempt from the law. Thats right, these guns are too dangerous for normal citizens but it is ok for LEO. But if that same Sig is not my duty gun but part of my personal collection it is a junk gun. I love the way the politicians rationlize this crap.

Another notable firearm on the can't sell in Ma. list is the Browning Hi-Power. It is my understanding that it has not been submitted for the "test". All those Hi-Power owners over the years problably did not know they had a untested firearm.

Also note that Freedom Arms Revolvers cannot be sold in MA. This law oddly enough discriminates against expensive pistols. Companies like Freedom arms cannot afford to scrap a bunch of $1200 revolvers for the testing required.

Hellow from the People's Republic of Massachusetts,

I curently own two P99's Both bought from a mass dealer (earl's repair service). I've heard nothing about this.

BTW: both Walter distributers are in Mass. Maybe you do have an old one, but I have seen plenty for sale in Mass rcently. Since bouth arein mass I would assume they submited them for testing right quick.

I figured that some type of "junk" gun law had a play in this. Just couldn't figure out how a Walther would fit in that category. There was also a piece of paper in the box from the Attorney General of Mass, stating how guns where dangerous if mishandled, etc. etc. - Duh! How much longer till we have warning labels on the muzzle stating "point this end toward target", or at the ejection port stating "Warning, placing fingers here during firing may create a danger of severe pinching or other injury". Heck, when they're done, we won't even need gun finishes, as every possible area will be covered by a warning label. Just my rant for the day.

Just a quick question from a gun luvin igner'nt fool from out west. Why do you, the good people of the Great State of Massachusetts put up with this crap? Vote those BUMS out of office!! If you have the power of Recall, like we have here in Arizona, use it!! Politicians here in AZ know that if they get out of hand, and P!ss people off too much, they can be voted out in mid-stream!! If the BUMS there don't trust you with that power,(or guns for that matter), work to change your State Constitution to include the right of Recall. Vote in people who believe in it too!!!
OK,the RANT is over! :)

Just as there is no such thing as too much fun,
there is no such thing as owning just one gun!!!

Off my meds (quit smoking), armed to the teeth, and loose on an unsuspecting society!!!

Hey denfoote-what an idea. Maybe it is worth a shot! Of course there are many people fighting the law, the above mentioned GOAL has a case in court now and others are forming. Since you live in Arizona, maybe you could send some money to the the people behind the Curtain to aid in the battle.

No sooner had I written that post when I went to my shops site www.fsguns.com and seen the walthers for sale. So as my brother from the North Shore said, you must have seen one from when the "law" first kicked in.

Don't want to seem rude, but all Mass. gun-owners, imho, should move.

Denfoote,
Since you're from one of them free states, let me educate you in the reality of life in a socialist, or in Jersey's case, a fascist state. Do you really think that we (RKBA gun owners) knowingly vote in these power starved dictators? Just happens to be that we are in the minority here. Most residents truly believe that "guns are evil", and accept the lies of the anti gunners as gospel. They really believe that outlawing guns, and/or licensing gun owners, and/or mandating "smart guns", and/or prohibiting CCW, will reduce crime, and make the streets safer. All we can do is try to educate our neighbors to the truth, one by one. Many NJ gun owners have fled the state (no offense to those that have), but for the time being, I've decided to stay and fight this cancer. If the cancer of Mass, Jersey, California, etc., is not stopped, it will spread until it destroys this great nation. Two examples of horrible cancer from Jersey, infecting the rest of the nation, is Lautenburg and Bradley.

Florio told us that he was a friend of sportsman, and would never infringe on the rights of gun owners. But after he was elected Governor, he implemented one of the first state wide assault weapons bans. Whitman promised to over turn the Florio ban, and was elected, with the help of gun owners, as Governor in ‘93. We even gave her a Republican Senate and Assembly. Not only did she not overturn Florio's ban, but she used her power to further restrict the RKBA. In ‘97, she narrowly won reelection, as many gun owners supported the Libertarian, Murray Sabrin. I think she finally got the message, as she has decided that running for Lautenburg's, soon to be vacant US Senate seat, would be a losing effort. She still advocates further infringements on gun ownership, and was the first Governor to ask for "smart gun" legislation, but I think she finally realizes that her political career in Jersey is over. We are now supporting Murray Sabrin for the Republican candidate to fill Lautenburg's seat. It's definitely a David vs. Goliath battle, but if successful, we will have another Ron Paul in the US Senate, and finally, something good from New Jersey.

Rant mode off,
David

I think we should hold as many IPSC, IDPA, GSSF, PPC, and Cowboy Action Shooting matches in NJ, Mass, NY, CA, IL, OH, and anywhere else the antis don't want us.

Greetings from Kennedy country. Need less to say I am staying put to fight nonsense. I started a neww job three years ago. Iget the new editions of the popular gun mags every month and read them at work, in my truck. Alot of or should I say most of the guys give me s^*t about it. They say I must be psycho and why does anyone need a gun. Well thats all changing now, I took one guy to the range on a friday evening after work. We shot my Ruger p89, my usp.40c, sig p239, and ruger mark2. This guy said he had a "blast" no pun intended. He also said he was glad he took my invitation, he sees that target shooring is fun, and that I am not psycho. Maybe it was myteaching him that I take firearms safety very seriously. Well anyway he says he would like to bring his kids down to teach them about gun safety and handling skills sometime. Also the next week people at work were asking me when they could go target shooting with me. I guess now I will have to buy that Dillon press now. But that just goes to show you to stand up for what you believe in, do something about it, and maybe it just is worth it staying to fight for your beliefs. I'll let you guys know about any other converts. Buy the way, my buddy actually shot better than me he is a natural.

Good work specialist, and here is a good reason to get that reloading press you have been eyeing. Sara Brady just hates the whole process of reloading, I mean how can you control it? That should be a good reason to reload, IMHO.

I hope none of those matches you want to hold in Massachusetts require the deadly human silhouette target, There also illegal in this state. I mean we all know how much crime those targets cause( ha-ha )!

I've heard of MA ban on humanlike targets.

I've always thought that this a 1st Amend.
issue. Has anyone ever challenged it on these grounds?

I've never heard of the silhouette target ban in fact alot of the stores around here in Mass sell them. I purchased some at a Boston area gun shop last year. Very interesting, I shall look into this.

I do not know the exact wording of the law as it pertains to the human like targets but it is my understanding that they are illegal to use in Ma.(maybe not illegal to sell?). I work about 5 min. from the S&W plant in Springfield and there was a article in the local paper about some of the matches/shoots at S&W that would be affected by this law. When the state changed the gun laws last year they made it all clear as mud.
