P99 - former range gun for $380? Deal or no?

Have a chance to buy a Walther P99 (9mm) for $380 out the door. It was one of the dealer's range guns. I checked it out and it looks to be in great condition. You'd never know it was a range gun from inspecting it. Also, it is genuine German production - with the eagle-over-N proof marks on slide, barrel and frame.

So, is this a good price or not for such a specimen?

It's a matter of desire. If you want it, get it.

Things to check for... Wear on the guide rod, firing pin, extractor. Examine side by side with a new one. Ask how many rounds has been through it, etc.

On all of my P99s, I hardly see any wear whatsoever. The places to check are on the top of the barrel hood and barrel, on the inside of the slide, and that's about it. If they are well cared for, the P99s will not show much wear at all. Look down the barrel to make sure it is still shiny and if so, it sounds like a great deal to me!

What's the date code on the frame (on right side just behind the accessory rail)? You can tell what year it was made from that. What are the import markings (Interarms or Walther USA)? If it is an Interarms, it may have the original trigger that is split for "safety". That trigger has an anomoly in that upon reassembly, you may have to pull the trigger slightly to get the takedown latch to lock back into place. But other than that, it is perfectly fine.

James

You will be getting what you are paying for it..At that price you should have no trouble getting your money out of it when you sell it, AND YOU PROBABLY WILL, in time..Use it for a future trade when you get to know it better..:)

With the price drop in P99's you can get a new one for not much over a hundred dollars more, sounds like a better deal.

i'd personally not buy a range gun, they aren't taken care of that well. $380 doesn't seem like much of a deal to me at all.

A "generalized" statement which may or may not apply in this case, only the buyer could tell if it has been taken care of by examining it. ;)

This price most certainly does not include shipping (at least $25-35) and FFL fees (if your transferring dealer charges, usually at least $25), so $500+ vs $380 is a more realistic comparison. :D

Higgins, if you decide not to get it, please send me the dealer's name and phone number as I have someone that might be interested in it for $380.

James

Alas, when I returned to purchase, someone had already bought it out from under me. C'est la vie. Thanks for all your replies.

:( Doh! You snooze, you lose. I've learned my lesson a couple of times. If I see something I like at a good price, I snatch it up, otherwise, it's not there when I go back.

Oh well, you can still get a new one for around $500 delivered, still not a bad deal.

James
