P99 firing pin drag marks

It's not so much your gun as it is your ammo. Many guns will leave the marks you speak of, especially in .40 S&W. Some say it also has to do with your recoil spring.

All of my P99's do it. All are .40 also, but I've never had a problem. Even my reloads do it. I've shot thousands of rounds and haven't had a problem, so I really haven't worried about it. Just thought it was the nature of the gun.

I contacted Earls about this problem to which they replied-"Mr. *******, you have nothing to worry about". I guess they would know, but it seems dragging the firing pin tip on the primer hard enough to make the gouge(drag) mark would weaken it in time. Im thinking that if I replaced the recoil spring with a stronger one like Sprinco, it would keep the barrel in the full "up" position long enough to allow the firing pin to retract after striking. Anyone have any experience with Sprinco?

I had an EAA Witness in .45 ACP that did the same thing. I tried heavier recoil and firing pin return springs with no effect.

It has to stress the firing pin, but maybe not enough to make a big difference in the life of the part.
