P99-any collector value?

A friend inherited a 40 S&W Walther P99 that appears to have been locked away in a safe NIB. It has the German marks, was made in 2000 (KK), and has the importer name on the right side of the slide--Interarms of Alexandria. Since Interarms was the original importer, he was wondering if the pistol was put in the safe due to collector interest. I don't know. Should he keep it NIB as a collector item or does he have a shooter? Thanks.

SWAMPY,

Does it have any engraving or is it just a regular P99? If it is one of the engraved ones, it's highly unlikely it has any "collector value".

German proof marks, Interarms import markings, KK date code is actually 1999 manufacture. Roll marked Walther and P99 markings.

This is a standard German P99 .40 S&W. Nothing special or collectable about it. The only difference between it and the ones you can buy now (that are REAL German made ones, not the S&W ones) are the import markings which now say "Walther USA, LLC, Springfield, MA".

Shoot it and have fun. Now, depending on how early a model it is, it may have the magazine/slide lock problem where the slide locks back prematurely before the magazine has been shot empty. In that case, you will have to send it to Earl's to be repaired.

What about this one. It's 9mm and I bought it new for $700. I have been shooting it (not my origonal intentions, but it shoots SOO good), is that unwise. I have been searching GunBroker.com and GunsAmerica.com for another one just like it. So far I havent found one. I was going to buy a second to save and shoot/carry this one. I started thinking about the 2000 unit limit, which is kinda high for a collectable pistol (under 500 generaly insures collectability and value beyond inflation). But, since I cant find another one like it, that leads me to beleave there might actualy be some collector value. What is the general concensus

Carbon_15,

If your gun were mine I would put it away and not shoot it any further.

Now that the prices have come down, get yourself a standard model and shoot that one all you like.

As far as the markings on the right front of the slide are concerned, I have one (9mmx19) that is marked Springfield, MA and the other two are Alexandria, VA. I really don't care for the MA markings but what can I do?

I want a QA but will try to locate one with the Alexandria, VA marking.

Carbon15: Re: your P99 Y2K model:

Well, I haven't shot mine and don't intend to. The 2000 unit number was WORLD WIDE. Don't know how many actually made it into the USA.

The value of it will certainly be diminished now that it's been shot, but it should still command more than a standard P99.

I concur with JimC: Buy a new standard P99 and put your P99 Y2K up.

James

I have one question. How can you tell it has been shot? I have always wondered that. There are atlease 2 guns in my safe right now that have over 10,000 rounds through them and could (and have) passed for NIB. Infact I just had one of them in the local gunsmith shop to replace some warn springs. He just looked at me and lemented about how they dont make 'em like they used to and said "its a shame to have to bring in a brand new gun for repairs". made my day. Needless to say, I take care of my weapons...even my working guns. I doubt you could find a bit of powder or fouling on any of my guns. I'm just kinda anal about keeping my guns looking nice. Thats not to say some guns dont look good when well worn, or that I baby my carry guns, or dont shoot and enjoy them. But I certainly dont toss them on the shooting bench or ram them in a sand filed holster.
The obvious answer besides powder residue, would be shiny spots from friction. the only place on my P99 that shows any finish wear is on the barrel at the ejection port, and it came that way from the factory from test fireing. That brings up another question (and reason why I didnt feal like I was doing any harm shooting it). Can you call a gun that was factory test fire 'unfired'? Will a factory fired only gun be worth more than the same pistol that was shot by the buyer a few times?

Here is a quick picture to illustrate my care and feeding point. Both of these guns have been shot (although the sig only has about 600 rnds through it, as it broke very soon after its purchase  and had to make a return trip) The Wlather has about 1500 rounds uner its belt and has actually been through a CCW qualification in some pretty miserable conditions. A good friend of mine was takeing his CCW class and his pistol (one of the big 3) choked in the freezing rain. I was at the other end of the range target shooting. I had my Glock 20 with about 30 rounds left and the Walther with about 100. I let him borrow the Walther under advisement that I was saveing 2 10mm silvertips just incase it got dinged;) Went home and cleaned the sleet out of it and it looked good as new.

Hey I agree, the Walther P99s are finished so well, and the polymer frame holds up so well, it is hard to tell there is wear and tear on them. But, you can tell. ;)

As you said, there will be wear on the barrel hood, barrel were it recoils through the slide and on the breech face. There will also be wear on the internal trigger bar.

But hey, other than that, the Walther's show very little wear if they are taken care of.

Toast, I don't know what neck of the Texas woods you are in, but they are selling around here for $449-$499. Several Dallas Fort-Worth dealers have them for that (Irving Firearms, Bachman Pawn & Gun, David Avery Firearms-Doc's Walther).

Now, since there are no more P99 Y2K Models at any distributors, what is on the dealer's shelves are it. Since Earl's is selling these for $775, $699 is a good deal. I got mine for $589 :D.

You need to shop around. Remember, the new RETAIL price of the Walther P99 is $599.99.

I that think I have just a standard P990. 9mmx19, all German proof marks, imported Alexandria/VA, KK on right side, serial 0221XX. Am I correct i.e. just one of your "run of the mill" German P99s? I purchased it a few months ago from a dealer for $500.00. In my area now, one dealer has P99s for $489.00. I couldn't seem to locate one for under $550.00 at the time of my purchase. Thanks ahead for your reply.

Once again we hear from the Glock guru from Alaska whose brain has been frozen from too much artic air that he can't stand to see Walther starting to dethrown his all mighty Glock.

Lets wait and see but if the SW99 success is a indication I will not hold my breath.
