I have been looking around at gun shops lately for a Walther P99 .40 and when I can even find one, I explain to the the guy that I want one that is all German manufacture. Most of them explain to me that S&W makes all of the P99 .40s now (they think). Is this true or did S&W just do a run of these guns for a limited time? Should I even care or is it just my "perception" that a P99 of German manufacture (proofmarks) will be of better quality?

The gun dealers your talking to don't know what they're talking about. S&W made about 3000 slides and barrels for the .40 when Germany couldn't keep up with demand. Walther has now caught up and you should be able to get an all German made P99 now. Look for the proof marks and "gold" laser engraving. The S&W'w will look silver.

There is a difference. The S&W aren't made as well and have a melonite finish instead of the Tenifer. IMO. Keep looking and ask you dealer to get an all German one in.

Thanks P99. So, the slides will not be roll marked but have laser engraving? Also, the proof marks will include an eagle over or under an N, correct?

Heres the proofmark of a genuine German P99, its on the rear-right of the slide-

The Walther banner and "P99" on my .40(blue) are not laser etched in gold. However, the proof etched on the slide is. So apparently not all of the P99s had the gold etching on the banner.

Most of the newer regular P99's that I've seen have the Walther banner roll marked and the rest laser engraved. The exception is the P99 QA It is all Laser engraved. I've heard that Walther will be going to all laser engraved on all P99's sometime soon. So the most telling sign that its German is the eagle over N. If it is laser engraved it will have a gold color to it. If you get one of the first ones, everything will be roll marked.

P99,

I'm sorry, I wasn't as clear as I should have been.

The Walther banner and "P99" are etched on the slide, just not gold tone. It is blue like the rest of the slide. The "N" proof however, is also etched and IT'S in gold. Serial # is 40####.

Thats OK. I think I understood you fine. My first two P99's have everything rollmarked. The banner, proof marks, serial number, etc. Then the third one changed. The banner was still roll marked, but the serial number and proof mark were laser engraved. On my P99 QA, everything is laser engraved.
