p97 problem

i have a ruger p97 that i really like but the dang slide release seems to wiggle out on its own after about 50 rounds of regular strenght ammo.. this worries me for obvious reasons, like i would not want the slide to hit me int he face when i am shooting it,, i have read where ruger will fix this problem if you talk to them about it, seems that i have lost my ruger stuff and dont know how to contact them,,, and what is their solution to the problem? is it a band aid or is it a good fix? thinking about trading in my p97 for a p90 which i have read noting butgood about (except fot those that have asthetic issues with it) i used to think it was ugly as well, but it seems to be growing on me with the problems that my p97 is having---p97 also shoots way low and left, can't seem to get the sights fixed to on target at 15 yards dead on,,, any suggestions besides get a sig (which don't fit my hand well at all) or glock (which i already have a g21 that i love) or an hk that i cant afford?

Customer service number, per my manual is 520-778-6555 (Prescott, Arizona).

Have a P95 and a P944, neither of which exhibit symptoms of the problems described with the P97's, therefore can't comment on them.

I don't think you need to worry about the slide hitting you in the face. The recoil springs, guide rod, barrel and magazine should make that highly unlikely (opinion). You may have to contend with it falling off the muzzle end, as in disassembly(?).

My P97DC experience

A while back I posted about having this problem with Winchester unboxed 230gr. "range" ammo only, also had problems with stovepiping and a drifting slide stop, although it never came out more than ~1/4". I've NOT had a problem with any other brand/type/weight of ammo, and tried firing homeboyz style with CCI Lawman 200gr JHP...50 rounds ON ITS SIDE and no problems whatsoever...other than missing the paper a lot.

I have not bought range ammo since but my cousin did when I took him to the range for the first time and the stovepiping was consistently back again...after he was done I shot 60 rounds of Federal 185gr HydraShoks with absolutely no problems.

OTOH, my uncle's P97DC had no stovepipes but had the drifting slide stop (fell out once!) in his first 200 rounds with range ammo. He's fed it a steady diet of premium ammo since: Golden Sabers, Hornady, HydraShoks all in 230gr. with no problems whatsoever.

I don't recommend unboxed Winchester range ammo based on our two guns' results, but YMMV. Try another brand or weight of ammo.

I had one that did the same thing. A real pain when it happened in a match. Ruger sent me a new slide stop that "seemed" to solve the problem, but I sold the gun soon after putting it in.

what if any problems have you guys had with the p90? thinking about getting one,, and do the 8 round mags work in it as well?

I had a KP-90 that i put well over 3,000 rounds thru without any problems at all.I replaced the 11lb recoil spring with a 13lb only because i fired a lot of +P's.The 8 round mags worked just fine in mine.My KP-97 was a completely different story,in addition to the problems with the slide release coming out when firing with 5 types of ammo, the single action trigger pull was strange, the hammer would start to drop then stop and then would fall all the way as the pull was completed and it was not very accurate with any ammo i tried.all the above problems was fixed except it was still not very accurate when i got it back.I later sold it to a friend who loves it and it's accurate for him so i assume it was not a good fit for me but i would take a good KP-90 over the KP-97 anyday.

This is more common than most people think. There have been numerous discussions on the subject over at Ruger Forum!!
www.rugerforum.com

It is for this reason that the P97 that sits, calling to me from my dealer's case remains there to this very day!!! ;)
