P97 or USP compact, which .45?

I handled both of these pistols y'day. Both pistols felt good in my hands. I like the cocked and locked capability of the HK, but I also liked the price of the Ruger compared to the USP ;)
Primary usage will be for home defense.

My question to you is- which would you buy and why.

I have the P97, but I've only handled the HK .45 once or twice. I just cannot conceive it's worth 2/3 more, street price, than the Ruger. IMO, the P97 is thee best value in a .45 out there.

No doubt, for me, the USP. I've heard good things about the Ruger but the USP's are just high quality over-engineered combat pistols. Polygonal rifling, SA/DA capability and flawless performances.

But that's just me... ;)

Heck,

Buy both. You'll be able to shoot the same ammo, too. One can never have enough guns.

HK
pros- better s/a trigger, C&L capability
cons- mainly price

P97
pros- price...
cons- crappy s/a trigger

hmmm.....

Personally, though I currently own a P97, I would go with a USP. Great gun. The P97 is also a good gun, but the USP is a better one. Well worth the money in my opinion.

A friend just had the same decision to make. He went with the H&K but in .40. He really likes the cocked and locked option. I like the USP Compact a lot myself (I kinda talked him into it. ;) ). The H&K is sort of the Porsche of combat autos where the P-97 is more of a Z-28. Here`s the rub though. A new 305hp. Z-28 isn`t as svelt or sophisticated as most Porsches but it`ll beat many of em and run with most of the rest for 1/4 of the money. :D Given the choice of either for near the same price I`d take the H&K in a hot minute but on the range my P-97 shoots every bit as well as my 2 buddies USPs. Thanks for the replies everyone! May have to do some negotiating with my finance comittee, er, wife :D on this one. Both are quality pistols, but I really like the cocked and locked option on the HK.

bk40: Just curious...if you like the C&L feature best, then why not a 1911? If I had to choose between my H&K uspc.45 and my Kimber, the Kimber wins.

If you're using it primarily for home defense, then the cocked and locked issue doesn't seem to matter as much in my opinion.

Given the choice, I'd go with the P97. You could get two for what you give for the HK, and then your wife gets one when something goes 'bump'

As far as overengineering goes, the Ruger P series is as highly overengineered as any auto on the market. Just about all P series are built like a tank. I'm not sure about the USP, but the P97 will digest anything you put through it, including high pressure loads and even wadcutters. I like that.

The USP-C will also shoot wadcutters without any problems (mine does) and there's abundant evidence that the full-size USP can handle .45 Super without problems (don't know about the C version).

And, XRayMind, unless gun prices are different in Alabama than they are in North Carolina, you can't actually get two P97s for the price of a USP-Compact (although the USP is indeed a good bit more expensive).

Get the HK. You won't regret it.

I own a USP45 for pure enjoyment of shooting it. However, P97 is every bit as a good as a practical home gun (similar recoil, almost equal accuracy). I even like decocker only P97 controls better. If buying for pleasure, USP is great. If for fighting, P97 would be almost as good (though with 7 rounds instead of 10 or 12). Magazines are cheaper for the P97. USP is reputed to resist corrosion better.

no decision yet- no bad choices between these 2. ATTICUS, you read my mind about a 1911 :)

search continues...

the deal is done.

went for the USP compact with s/s slide. :D

came oh so close to buying a Colt 1991A1, but a certain Texan on this board threatened me with bodily harm..... ;)

Thanks for everyones input!

If you decide to get extra magazines keep an eye out on ebay, I've seen them there for the 40c with really good prices in the past ($10 - $15 or so).
