P7 cleaning

Was in Walmart today and picked up some non-chlorinated brake cleaner and some white lithium grease (about 4 bucks total)...how is brake cleaner on hard chrome and is lithium a good lubricator? It seems to stay put and hold up well in other applications...is it okay for hadguns and the internals of the P7?

Hello DSIM,

Your P7 is probably worth over $1,000.00

So you want to save a couple of bucks on maintenence?

Would you take your Mercedes-Benz to the corner gas station, or to the authorized dealer?

Hoppes #9, WD-40 and Birchwood-Casey gunscrubber for cleaning, and Tetra-Gun Grease and Break-Free CLP for lubrication will not break the bank.

WD-40 is about the absoulute worse thing you can use on your firearm...well, peanut butter is worse. Brake cleaner will work fine as long as you keep it from coming into contact with anything made of plastic and you apply lubricant back the surface when you are done. I do not use it but there is nothing wrong with it if you are careful. Mark IV does make a good suggestion. CLP will clean and lube all at the same time. Do you have the HK tool for cleaning the gas tube? If so, use it and keep the CLP out of the opening. Apply CLP, use bore brush, push a clean patch through the bore and repeat until the clean patch comes out the same way it goes in. Apply a moderate amount of CLP to a clean patch and push it through the bore. This will protect from the elements. Run a clean patch through the bore befor use. I like MP-7 myself. I can get it cheap or otherwise I would use CLP. Keep your gas system clean and do not over lube. I would suggest that you not use grease. Its heavy, it attracts everything gritty and in cold weather it can make your weapon a very expensive brick. A light coating of preserving oil should be all you need.

I agree with Gumbo, use MPRO7, it is reasonably cheap from Dillon or Midway. I just ordered 32 onzs from Dillon so I could clean my 3 P7's on Thursday.

I suggest the following. Break each one down and resoundly spray them down with MPRO7. Scrub the bore a bit and spray them again. Now, using q-tips, patches and a lot of tender loving care, justly deserved on a fine weapon like the p7, clean them everywhere. Run the cleaning tool in the gas retard chamber, pull down the firing pin and wipe it down them finally patch the barrel clean.

I lube with Castrol gun lube and mil-tec grease (lightly) on the barrel and wear points for the slide, then light oil everywhere else.

This takes me about 45 minutes per gun to get it reasonably clean for storage in the safe.

Be sure to check the label. The Operator's Manual (p.19) says: "Do not use solvents or gun oils which contain chlorine or acids for cleaning of the pistol."

Just what is in gunscrubber or Mpro? The ingredients on the brake cleaner say acetone, heptane, xylene ethylbenzine and propane...if the gun cleaners are truly different, then I will spend the extra money without hesitation...

Paper Clip! -

I keep a straightened paper clip with a short 90 degree bend to reach in the chamber end and make sure the gas hole hasn't started to plug..Roy
