hi everyone, was thinking about trading in my ruger p345 for a ruger lcr...for use as a ccw gun...any feedback would be helpful. One concern would be if a 38 is good enough to carry? the P345 is just to bulky of a gun

Some of the modern +p loadings in .38 Special, namely the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel, Remington Golden Saber, and Winchester PDX1, perform very well. .38 Special is plenty of gun in my opinion, and it will carry profoundly easier than the P345.

I have actually done an almost identical trade in the past. I never regretted a second of it. I didnt care for the P345 and I loved the snubbie I traded it for. Some will bash them for limited capacity but to me they are hard to beat. Especially for hot weather carry. Maybe not as many rounds as others or as potent as some but .38 Special has been an effective cartridge since 1899 and the loadings now are better then ever. I have carried a snubbie .38 for 12+ years everyday and I dont see a need to change my EDC. I load Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135 grain +P and Buffalo Bore 158 grain LSWCHP +P and I feel well armed with it and trust my life to it. A snubbie is extremely diverse in carry options, dead reliable, light and still supplying a good SD cartridge. I would take a .38 Special over a smaller .380acp anyday. I dont think you would regret the trade because I have yet to encounter weather that restricts my carry of my snubbie but it does effect carry of my other guns. In an enviroment where it is really hot and really humid a snub is worth its weight in gold if you want to be armed and not sweat to death.

As far as ccw goes, imo you wouldn't go wrong with the lcr. Or any ruger. If your worries include the effectiveness of the .38 then why not get the lcr in .357? Wich would give you ALOT more ammo choices & you could still use the more inexpensive .38's. Just a thought. Another option to consider is the lc9, super slim, 2 more rounds, twice the reload speed.

what willmc33 said. stick with the LCR.

I recently traded an SW 638 for an LCR 357 and love it. I can practice with 38's and then fill it with 357's and drop it in the pocket of my jeans in a Desantis pocket holster for carry.

If you compare the LCR with any Taurus revolver side by side you will understand what WILLMC33 means.

well i have not seen any of the Taurus versions of the lcr in my area so didn't know if they were any good,thanks...was reading the thread about whether 5 rounds was enough.so now its got me thinking about sticking with my p345..not sure what to do

The LCR is an outstanding gun. Load with the Speer short barrel loads, or the Rem. 125+P Golden Saber. Good stuff. Carry in front pocket of pants or shorts in a Uncle Mike's or Nemesis pocket holster. Almost disappears.

I've heard that the P345 is a good gun, but I've never owned one. That said, it looks a little big for a CCW, at least in the summer or warmer climes. An LCR, on the other hand, is a really good size for CCing. Slip it in a pocket holster and it'll just disappear in almost pair of pants. (Unless, of course, you wear spandex, but that's a whole different problem.)

As far as the caliber goes, well, I prefer .45 as an SD round to a .38, but carrying a pistol large enough to chamber it isn't always an option. I wouldn't feel undergunned with a .38, and certainly not with a .357 Mag. At SD distances, any one of the three will do the trick. I got to shoot an LCR in .357Mag at a range a while back, and got to test it with both .357 and .38 rounds. The .357 kick was pretty stout, but I could have learned to deal with that, time and finances permitting. The .38 was perfectly manageable, and created an acceptably-sized group.

Just get some Buffalo Bore 158 grain LSWCHP +P and stick with .38 Special. Once you touch off some of these you might not want to try a .357 in that frame. The BB is an excellent .38 Special round and the recoil in a lightweight snubby is pretty hardcore and its just a +p not a full house magnum round.

How did Taurus end up in here? The P345 is a 45acp full-size semiauto made by Ruger last I heard. And it is a good gun but not a CCW. if that is all the poster wants , the LCR will be beter than the P345.

no thats the gun i just got rid of for the lcr...was just talking about the thread about whether 5 rounds was enough for a ccw and if the 38 was a good enough load..
