p226 in 9mm, .357 SIG, or .40 S&W

This will only be for home defense, and sometimes for concealed carry.

What should I get, a sig p226 in 9mm, .357 SIG, or .40 S&W?

I would say get it in the .40s&w. That way if you want, you can get conversion barrels for either of the others if you are interested in the future.

9mm P226

Cheaper to shoot, recoils less, generally more accurate than .40, and most definitely easier on the gun. From my experience, the P226 functions best in 9mm (from a reliability standpoint). The other versions (calibers) are still good though, just not as "proven" as the Sig P226 in 9mm is.

Ok I'm pretty much sold on the 9mm p226. But can you explain to me why the p226 can only hold 13 rounds, yet the glock 17 can hold 17 rounds? This last problem is the only thing that's making me think twice.

Too big for carry

Unless you won't change your mind consider a P229 or even a P239 for daily use. The P226 is big and more difficult to use on a daily basis. I'd get the .40 no doubt about it. You can get a 357SIG barrel and a special 9mm conversion barrel and you've got three calibers in one. :D

I've already ruled out the 239 because it only has 8 rounds.

The 229 is interesting (it has 12 rounds), but I decided that my first handgun purchase will be a full-size.

Later on, as I practice more, I'll consider getting a compact model (maybe the glock 19) for concealed carrying.

The 226 in 9mm holds 15 rounds. Preban 15-rounders are almost as easy to find as Beretta 15-rounders and run close to the same price.

P226

This is my favorite Sig Sauer. I have the P239 (9mm) and P226 (9mm), and both are great but the P226 being a full sized weapon is more accurate and easier to handle. I had the chance to buy a P229, but I didn't care for it...it wasn't as accurate in my hands as the 226 or 239. Of course, the results will vary according to shooter. I think you are making a great choice by getting the P226. With a proper holster, it should carry fairly well (especially if you are a large man).

I lean toward the .40.in the P229. The P229 was designed for the .40, and the P226 was designed for 9mm. The P229 (for me) is more ergonomic and has a much better trigger-reach. It is plenty big enough to be considered "full-size."

The .40 S&W beats the 9mm hands down as a defensive round (it was specifically designed to replace the 9mm). (Before anybody gets too upset, the 9mm is a good round, and I currently carry it in its 147 grain version.) As far as the .357 Sig, why bother?

P226=15RDS

The P226 mag holds 15rds of 9mm.It holds 12rds of 40 and.357sig,but i do not think any pre-ban 40 or .357 mags were imported.

I have had my P226 since 1989 and i have 10 mags and they all hold 15rds of 9mm.There are some(MEC-GAR i think)that hold 17rds.

I have a P229 with both 40 and .357sig barrels and i would buy a P229 in one of these calibers over a P226 in these.

Hmmm, that is most likely a misprint on the website. The P-226 was design with 15 rounds in the magazine. There are also 20 round factory mags that extend a little over an inch below the grip.

I've got a P226 in 9mm and several 15 round mags. Now, the P228 holds "only" 12 or 13.....

I've also got the P226 in .357 Sig. I agree that if you want one gun for everything, get the P229. It's a lot easier to carry than the P226 and it's just as accurate. That said, the P226 is great. Accurate as hell, reliable, and it's got the best DA trigger I've come across (in an auto). I'd get the .357, then add a 40 barrel and a 9mm barrel and 9mm magazines after.

Yes, the original P226 was designed for 9mm only. It had a carbon steel slide and would not handle the 40 or 357. All the newer P226 models (9/40/357) have a milled stainless steel slide to handle the 40/357 rounds. The P226 is an awesome gun and you will not be sorry if you decide to get it.

I've seen that too on SIGArms website, etron, but the site is wrong; the gun holds 15. Don't take this as a flame, but you might want to give me more than an hour and fifteen minutes to respond to your question.

Live in the fast lane - 357 sig. The trade-off is you will be a little deafer when you pop the home intruder than you would be with the other rounds.

My next purchase is a 239 in 357 sig.

If you're not going to get a Sig P220 in .45,

then I would get the P226 in 9m/m, as ammo
is available virtually every where; cuz it's
a NATO round.:D:)
