P220 Sport vs. 1911

I don't plan on getting it soon, but I usually plan for about 1-3 years before I get a gun:). I am looking for a good gun for general purpose target shooting at the range. I have narrowed my search to 2 guns: the SIG P220 Sport and a 1911, which I plan to build myself on a Caspian Frame and Colt slide. I would like to know which one has better accuracy, recoil, etc. My local range doesn't have any for me to try out, so I have to ask you guys.

Thanks

I guess that would depend on how good a pistolsmith you are. A well-fitted 1911 will shoot rings around anything else out there. A poorly-fitted one will just throw them all over the place. In my opinion the most accurate out-of-the-box .45 ACP pistols for around $1000 are the Kimber Eclipse and Target models.

"Built" guns do terrible on the resale market. Get the best "turn key" gun for your money and be happy. The P220 Sport sounds good, as does the Kimber Eclipse or a Target model. Have all the Sport models from Sig and they're very hard to beat for the money. I'm not a 1911 guy.

Tough choice. I'm a huge Sig fan for defense pistols (redundant, I know) but for pure target shooting I prefer my Kimber.

Really depends on what you are going to do with the gun. If it is just to shoot for fun the P220 Sport is a great pistol. I added a Sprinco recoil reducer to mine and with the compensator and all steel construction the recoil is like a soft 9mm. The SA pull is very light and crisp, the pistol is very accurate. The resale should also remain good on the P220 Sport. If you are thinking about using the gun as a carry gun or for IPSC standard or IDPA match shooting then a 1911 would be your choice. The Sport would have to shoot in open class IPSC against compensated and dot sighted high capacity guns. In IDPA it is not legal. If you want to tackle it yourself, good luck, but you are creating a Frankenstein pistol and since you are not a known smith there is little resale value beyond what used major components are worth. If you are looking to spend around $1000, the best 1911 I have seen is the Valtro.

Many of us have made (and are making) the same choices.

There is some kind of primeval attraction to the .45 1911 gun. A man has GOT to have one.

The SIG P220 Sport is a damn fine weapon and is worth every penny. Got to have one of these too!

Buy BOTH!

If that's not an option, go with the SIG. Mine is every bit as accurate as my 1911s.

Oh, and another question.

How do you get past the wife? She told me "no more guns!" That was 3 guns ago, though.:D

From what it sounds like, It seems as if I should get the SIG. The 1911 will be next;).I have no experience with 1911s, except for once where I held a friend's Sistema, so maybe building one is not such a good idea.

I don't plan on selling my gun, so resale value means nothing to me. I haven't sold any of my guns yet. I don't know. I just seem to bond with them, no matter how crappy they are.

Does anybody know a place to get a SIG Sport for cheap? Like $900-1100? The cheapest I can find it around here is $1300, which is a touch too much for me. I'd like to keep my costs down to a minumum.
