P22 Feeding Problems

Has anyone else had feeding problems with their P22? Took the gun out to the range today and had problems all day. Haven't had a chance yet to see if the bottom of the feed ramp has an edge.

There seems to be a lot of slop of the top round in the mag. When the slide slides forward the round is slammed into the bottom of the feed ramp without getting angled up. The tip of the .22 gets dented.

Also, after some ejections there is a failure to feed even though the slide has locked forward, so no round jamming but just the next round hasn't been picked up.

I've tried Remington Hyper-velocity stuff, Rem subsonic, Federal AE and Federal bulk.

Disappointing.

That's all I have to say about my P22. Yes, mine had several failures to feed exactly as you describe. I've tried Winchester, CCI MiniMags, Remington Golden Bullet and Vipers. Very rare to shoot through either mag without a FTF of some sort. Have shot at least a brick of various ammo without much success. And yes I've stripped and cleaned it.
Thought about taking it to S&W, about 35 miles away as they're the authorized warranty center, but even if they repair the feeding issue I'll still have to deal with the lousy trigger and sub-standard sights.
Mine is getting a serious case of swap. Tried to use it as a deposit on a DSA STG58 but the dealer already had 3 in the used gun case and didn't want any more. Once he moves a couple he'd take it, trouble is the DSA's are out of stock now.
Maybe I got a fluke, it happens, but the P22 IMHO is a good idea that went bad, probably due to trying to hit a price point. Anyone that asks, I tell them to buy a Ruger or Browning, both superior firearms in my opinion.

I've had the same problem with the American Eagle stuff in the red brick. However whenever I use high velocity and match grade ammo the thing works great. No malfunctions at all.

I know this sounds dopey, but are you guys slapping your mags after you load them? Sometimes the simple stuff is the easiest to forget.

(Slapping - smack loaded mag onto leg firmly, cartridge-base side against leg, to line 'em up properly, before inserting mag into weapon).

Are people really smacking their mags every time they shoot?

Not sure if that procedure would help. As the slide picks up the new round I notice the round goes horizontal rather than angled up and then jams.

Have tried tapping the mag, force of habit, loading only 5 rounds, loading 7 rounds, etc. Gun still shoves the round directly into the feed ramp and jams just as Sigger226 describes.

Before doing the gunsmith thing, I would check the mags. Mine came with two. The lip alignment on them is different. Mine both feed fine, but I noticed when loading them that they are not the same. They also needed a good disassembly/cleaning before use, as they had preservative inside and out.

I slap the mags on every semi-auto weapon I own, after I fill the mag with cartridges. I don't do it again unless I think the mag has been whacked around severely enough to push the rounds away from the rear of the mag. How many FTF's this has prevented, I really don't know, as I have never not done this. I learned this somewhere very long ago, when I was a kid. It is just something I do, and I don't even think about it much. I don't have too many FTF's, though. In fact, I can't ever remember having an FTF, just some FTE's on two guns that I no longer have.

Maybe, I'm just lucky. I keep my firearms clean, and the mags as well, but I can't say that I do anything that much different than anyone else that I ever noticed. Given the difference in the mags for my P22, and the fact that I have not had any feed/eject problems with it at all, I don't know what else I can suggest.

Well, I will try to clean and lube the mags to see if it makes a difference for the FTF problems as the rounds may be getting stuck and not coming up far enough. There is a bit of stiction.

I will check the feed lips on the mags as they may be causing the nose of the rounds to dive due to friction.
