P22 Assembly, doh!

Bought a used P22 from a friend of mine and sat down to clean it. True to form, I managed to hose it up on the first try….

During the assembly I put the slide back on, with the main spring, but, to my embarrassment, without the spring guide rod. Now, when I try and remove the slide, the spring twists in a position to where I don't have enough clearance to get the slide back off.

Anyone else run into this?
 
the first time took me about an hour, then read the instructions and looked at the pics, still its a pain in butt.
 
If you reverse the guide rod and insert it through the guide rod portal you should be able to hold the spring in a more or less horizontal position for disassembly.
