+P Question

At a recent gun show i noticed several handguns that clearly said "NO + P ammo" somewhere on the gun. What determines this? Is it merely the thickness of the slide or frame?Would a beefier cylinder make a difference? Does a +P rating automatically make a better firearm? :)

There are many factors that effect the strength of any firearms. Design, thickness of the metal or other material, heat treatment of the material, the specific alloy, and various other considerations. There is no way for the consumer to measure the ability of a firearm to withstand pressures greater than those recommended by the manufacturer. Just abide by the information the manufacture provides. If you want a magnum, buy a magnum.

I wouldn't buy one that said no +P even if I was planning on shooting standard ammo. IMHO, that means the gun is less than perfect and a little on the weak side. I would rather get a better rated gun and shoot the lesser load in it. Unless someone did a custom load, I doubt you will ever hear of a 357 Mag that was blown apart by a hot 38 load.
