+P Ammunition out of .38 Special Police Positive

I have recently obtained a .38 special Police Positive for my own Personal defense. I plan to carry this sidearm for defense, as well as for feral dogs and pigs when hunting. As I realize that it is on the small size for some feral hogs, I would likd some advice on specific loads that might provide the most stopping power, as well as penetration, and was primarily curious if I could shoot +P ammunition out of this gun. I have heard both oppinions, yay or nay. Please help.

Thanks.... :D

You have one of two guns, A police positive, in which case is shoots 38 smith and wesson, or a police positive special, in which case in can shoot 38 special.

Since the PPS was first made in the beginning of the 1900s yours could be rated for no +Ps, limited +Ps, or the re-introduced model which may be rated for +P usage. The date of your PPS would help in determining.

Thanks guys,

It is a Police Positive Special, and am unaware of the date made. Any idea where I can get that information based on the Serial #?, which is 83****.

Thanks

That serial number puts it around 1964 and a 3rd generation PPS. A limited amount of +P usage is advised. The frame can stretch from continued use of +P ammo.

+P is perfectly safe. Practice with 38 Specials. Carry 38 Special +Ps. Do not use 38 Special +P+ ammunition. Mine is accurate with Federal Hydra-Shoks in 158 gr.

Unless you were talking about feral "prairie" dogs and "guinea" pigs, I would like to second the statement made by nemesis above.

the sarcasm gets old

Look guys, as I am not a huge handgun guru as many of you probably are, I simply wanted to find a website where I could get some advice to best optimize the performance of the equipment that I have. If you have some credible data or figures about how a .38 Special wont kill a feral dog or pig, please share. I have killed both with smaller calibers with well placed shots. It seems a common trend on this site that someone will ask an honest question and it opens up the field for everyone's smart-a$$ comments. Thank you for those of you who responded with valuable info and knowlege, as for the rest, please feel free to continue to interject your two cents worth on a variety of subjects im sure. Know however that there is a certain group of us out there that could really go without the continual sarcasm, snide remarks, and overall waste of post space due to lack of content.

A well-placed .38 Special will turn out the lights of a feral dog or pig. That's pretty much true for any caliber...just ask the eskimos that hunt polar bears with .22LR rifles.

Use what you have, and if you can put the bullet where it's supposed to go, then caliber is a secondary concern. Not everybody can afford the latest scoped Supermagnum handcannon just for discouraging feral critters.

I swear, there's not a sport or hobby where you don't have people coming to the party with the latest brand new wonder equipment, who then proceed to belittle those who have "lesser" hardware.

That's a good little handgun. It may not be a Python, but the Colt PP was one of the company's mainstays for many many decades. Whenever I find an old Colt revolver it makes my kind of sad because Colt is just a shadow of it's former self. Enjoy.
