P-99 out of production?

I asked my local firing range to find a
Walther P-99 for me and after they called
a couple of wholesalers, the wholesalers
said that they were out of production.
How can that be? I thought that model was here to stay. Especially since they just
came out with the DAO version. Can anyone tell me why this has happened? Does it have to do with Smith&Wesson and their SW-99. If it's true,it's a shame. I really wanted one.

All he handles is Walther. Imports them and the parts himself. Good guy to do business with. I want to get a standard P99 myself but haven't gotten around to it yet. Too many guns and not enough money

dcblue,I just purchased one Firearms Unlimited in Bridgeville Pa.He has anohter in stock in 40sw.His number is 412-221-3500.A dealer in your area would be able to get it for you if you dont live in Pa.It is the most accurate handgun I have ever fired.More accurate than my Wilson CQB.It is a must in my book.
 
Thanks for all the replies. I took Cawdor's advice and I wrote an e-mail to Earl's Repair. Mr.Sheehan replied to tell me that the info I was given was totally false. I had a feeling there was something to that rumor anyway. Interarms does not import them anymore and also Smith&Wesson takes care of all warranty work. Something sounded fishy to me, but after I knew all that I still wanted a P-99. Well, when it came time to find one, I was dissapointed when I heard that the P-99 was "out of production". I assumed the company had shut down. That was the last straw and I was completely turned off to the P-99. I instead went with
Beretta. I know they are not going anywhere and above all they make a reliable, balanced, sweet shooting pistol.
