I WANT TO NOW HAW MANY OF YOU THINK THE 228 IS ONE OF THE BEST 9 MM THER IS BECOUSE AT THE GUN SHOP THEY TELL ME THAT THE 229 IN 9MM IS MUCH BETTER THAN THE 228 I WANT TO NOW WICH WAN WOULD YOU BUY.:(

The P228 is a great pistol. Personally I would prefer it somewhat to a P229 in 9mm. They are both good. I have never seen a bad SIG. Watch-Six

I bought the 229. Not because it is a better gun, but because it was available. 228s have spotty availability in this country. You have to look long and hard to find new ones. Most people say the 228 is better balance. However, the 229 has a stainless slide, so that is a big plus for some people. I probably would have opted for the 228 if it was available at the time I ran across my 229 (I only paid $550 for it, so unless I found a 228 for a similar price, I still would have bought the 229). In short, I think these two are equivalent.

Seems to me a lot of gun store employees don't know what they're talking about. Around here the only thing they know about is 1911s and .40*&* Glocks. Whenever I mention 10mm, Sig, or anything not with the current trends, they look at me funny. TFL is by far the best resource I've ever found about handguns.

No matter if you pick a P228 or P229, you've picked an excellent pistol. I own a West German P228, and out of all the guns I've ever tried, it's by far my favorite. The P229 is nice, too... but when it came time to choose, I preferred the feel and balance of the P228. It's not "inferior" at all. If the P228 was an inferior weapon, I truly doubt the military and law enforcement demand for it would be so great.

Anyway, considering that they're both utterly reliable and accurate guns, just handle both of them and pick the one that feels best to you. Your really can't go wrong either way! Enjoy your Sig!

The P229 has a bigger stronger slide. The P228 "feels better" to most people, because it is balanced better.

Personally I would choose the P228. The P229 is too bulky for a 9mm pistol IMO.

Nothing wrong with either gun.

The P229 was originally designed by SIG to chamber .40 S&W and/or .357Sig ammunition. This is why it is a bit beefier than the P228.

I prefer the P228 to the P229 in 9mm. The P228 has a better balance, and is lighter, than the P229, but both are great pistols.

I'm of the same opinion as most poster's on this forum.
The Sig P228 just seems to be much better balanced;
due in part, to the Sig P229's slide being milled from a
solid block of stainless steel. I have owned both, a P228
9m/m and a P229 in .40 S&W. I still have the P228; but
sold the P229, as I didn't care for that weapon in its .40
caliber offering.

WELL, I HAD A 228 AND I ONLY KINDA LIKED IT. IT WASN'T AS GOOD AS MY P220 AND IT DID GIVE ME A PROBLEM WITH THE TRIGGER AT ONE TIME, BUT NEVER REPEATED THAT PROBLEM.
FOR A 9MM COMPACT SERVICE AUTO, IT'S JUST FINE. I LIKE THE FEEL OF IT AND CLASSIC SIG LOOK OF IT BETTER THAN THE 229.

;)

To me, the P228 and P229 are more alike than different, but the difference is significant. Like earlier posters, I find the P228 has much better balance. I think the top-heaviness of the P229 is a plus when shooting .357 and .40, but is overkill for 9mm. However, I may be prejudiced, as the P228 is my fav SIG and I own three of them. :)

Basically, the choice is win-win.

I was looking at both before I made my decision. Just like everyone else is saying, to me the 228 balances better in my hand. There is really no reason to have the heavy stainless steal slide for the 9mm, but you do need it for the .40 and .357 sig, due to their higher pressure. Just for a note, the 226 with the stamped slide also felt better in my hand then the one with the milled slide, but buy whatever feels the best to you. As for quality, both are 100%.
