P-11 or G-27

Hi everyone,

I just got my CCW, in California of all places, and am trying to decide which pistol to carry. I love my glock 27. It shoots great and it feels better in my hand, not to mention I prefer the .40. I like the weight and size of the Keltec better though. My question is, should I carry the gun that I shoot better, or the one that I don't even realize is there?

Carry the one you know you'll ALWAYS carry. The G27, left at home, is of little use.

I carry a Glock 26 some, but alot of the time I carry a Kel-Tec P-11. The G26 is easier to shoot well, so I practice more with the P-11.

Good luck...

Glock is probably a better gun (more accurate, easier to shoot, etc.), but the Kel-Tec is easier to carry (lighter, smaller, same capacity).

If you don't mind the extra bulk, go Glock. If you plan on carrying a lot (particurly in a pocket or ankle), go with the Kel-Tec.

While I'm a long-time owner and admirer of the Kel-Tec P-11, I'd suggest you consider the GLOCK, but just look around for a good, inside-the-waistband holster that makes it comformtable to wear.

Shooting the P-11 well is difficult. It is as accurate as (or, perhaps, more accurate than) the Glock, but much more difficult to shoot -- especially under pressure.

I've shot a lot of guns in IDPA competition, including my P-11. I generally do quite well with most guns, but never better than mediocre with the P-11.

If the P-11 is the primary gun you'll shoot, and you plan to shoot it a lot, it'll be ideal for your purposes. (By a lot, I mean a LOT!) But, otherwise, go for the Glock.

(A similar gun I now carry, in place of the P-11, is the Star Firestar Plus. Slightly larger, 8 oz. heavier, but very easy to shoot and very easy to carry with the right IWB holster. Its a relatively narrow single-action only. You can find them for reasonable prices, NIB, if you look around.)

A light-weight gun isn't worth a crap if you can't hit what you're aiming at when the balloon goes up...

Thanks everyone for the info. Maxinquaye, I live in Mendocino County, which is very Pro-CCW.....what a great county to live in! Thanks again everyone.

I have both the P-32 and P-11. Am good with both. Carry the P-32 most since it is absolutely impossible to detect. And it's not only comfortable, it doesn't "pester" me.

Yes, I know it's "only" a 32, but it's on me ALWAYS.

I do plan to go back to the P-11 once the weather cools. In S.C. summers are hot and humid. And I refuse to change my mode of dress to suit a gun; let the gun suit me.

You can become proficient with most any gun with practice. And shouldn't we be doing just that - practice? I have shot Glocks, but personally I am more comfortable with the inherent safety of the long trigger pull on the P-11 or P-32. I can use the belt clip and be really safe with either one, not so with Glock. I do not have a large body frame and am tall, so size of my piece is a major factor. Any king of leather holster just adds to the bulk. And as said above, I refuse to be uncomfortable just to have a bigger gun.

If you calculate the odds, it's better to ALWAYS carry a smaller gun than "most" of the time carry a big one. Why? The odds of actually needing to fire are less than 1/100. Carrying 100/100 with my P-32 beats carrying only 80/100 with a larger gun. And practice will yield you the key shot placement should you need it.

Sure, the bigger the better, but I personally lean toward carry always vs carry most of the time. Well, guess I've opened the can of worms again. Oh well! Have at it. Isn't this one of the reasons that we have so many sizes/styles/actions/calibers of guns to keep us wanting yet another? For all of the above, I am actually drooling over a H & K USP45! There. I've said it. Go for it!!!

You guys have started a conversation I've been planning to bring up for days...
Is the P11 (or P40) a reliable gun? I am selling my Kahr MK40 because the grip is just TOO short. I'm planning on buying another one, and was leaning toward the new Kahr P9. The grip's over a half inch longer, add the Pearce grips, and I'm happy. The P40 is also a half inch longer, and Pearce makes grips for that too. But would I be in any way less protected (OR less happy) if I spent $200 less on the Kel-Tech over the Kahr?

Thanks!

P.S. - Ragin Cajun... HKUSP45 is worth all the drool you're expending on it. I decided against selling/trading mine for a smaller gun, and as you can see, I'm going elsewhere for carry. USP!!!

Thanks again everyone for the input. I've decided that I'll carry the P-11 for the rest of the summer using the belt clip. I've been practing with it and it is more than satisfactory for me. I still shoot the glock better, but I've practiced with it for at least a year. When it cools down I'll carry the glock or my USP .40. It's too hot right now to carry a holster. I agree it's more important to have any gun in any caliber than a sharp stick.

Onslaught:

I've been very happy with my P11. My only complaint is that since it's a new design, the holster selection isn't all that great (unless you go generic).
