P-07 Range Report

Hey folks,
I have had my P-07 for a little over a week now, and I have managed to make two trips to the range with it. I must say, I am in love with this pistol! If you want to read the report, go ahead, otherwise, the pictures are at the bottom .

Trigger
The double action is heavy, but I want it that way, since I am choosing to run it with the decocker instead of the safety. It is smooth, though, and I had no problem putting rounds on target. I shot one full mag in double action before I even tried using the single action.
The single action pull is absolutely amazing. It is so light that I had an accidental double tap the first time I used it. That only happened once, though, as I put a little more time and concentration into my trigger control after that.

Recoil
The recoil is almost pleasant. Of course, it is 9mm, so I wasn't expecting much, but it is definitely a soft shooter, and reacquiring the target was quick and easy.

Reliability
I went through 150 rounds on my first trip out with no malfunctions. I was using Perfecta 115 grain FMJ. Today's trip was 100 rounds of steel cased Tula 115 grain FMJ. There was one FTE during that trip, but I am fairly certain that was an ammo issue, as I had an FTE out of my PT111 G2 on the same trip out of the same box of ammo (Tula), and that gun has not had any other failures in the 800+ rounds I have run through it.

Ergonomics
I like the way it feels in my hand. It points naturally, and fills my hand nicely. I was surprised when I tried out the different backstraps. At home before going to the range, I liked the small best, which was surprising, as I have rather large hands (XL gloves are sometimes a bit snug), but when I got it to the range, I liked the way it shoots with the large installed. Either way, I was still able to be accurate; it just felt more secure in my hand when I fired it with the large.

Bonus
As I mentioned in another thread, it came with two +2 mag extensions in the case. I didn't notice them right away, as they were in the same little plastic bag as the backstraps, and I didn't mess with those until last night. They make the grip longer, of course, but not by much, and they actually make the grip just barely longer than the width of my hand, so I am a happy camper. Nothing I read in other reviews or in the description of the gun on Bud's website indicated that they would be included, but hey, I'm not gonna' look that horse in the mouth ;).

OK, it's time for some pics :D. Thank you for your patience.

First, here is a close up.

This is one of the targets I shot today. That is 50 rounds aimed at the "8" on the target.

Here it is in my hand. As I said, the +2 extension makes it a beautiful fit for my big hands.

Nice review. That +2 base plate and large backstrap give the P-07 a different form.

That trigger looks comfortable. The recurve trigger on my 75 Compact is literally painful. Have you tried the safety?

Nice write-up. Yours is the 3rd where I've heard of the unintentional double in single action mode and this concerns me a bit. Have any idea what weight the SA pull is?

BTW, I lived in Bellevue for 4 years. :D

Limnophile - I have not tried the safety, and I probably won't. I'm just not that big on the idea of cocked and locked carry.

Striker - the accidental double fire was entirely my fault. This is the first hammer fired DA/SA I have ever owned, and I'm relatively new to handguns overall. It is a training and trigger discipline issue, not a gun issue.

I don't think it is a mechanical issue with the gun but sounds more like a "characteristic"...that's why I asked how light the SA pull is...it may be too light?

Thank you for the review. I don't think I've ever seen a picture of the large backstrap on the P-07. Really makes a big difference.

Not a huge polymer fan, preferring the metal frame CZ pistols. However, this one is attractive to me. Nice report, and making it more difficult to keep ignoring the newer CZ's. From what I am seeing the P-09 is a winner also.

Has anyone measured the DA trigger pull weight and SA trigger pull weight with a scale? I bought the Sphinx SDP and the DA pull was too stiff for me so I took one coil off the main spring and it is much more pleasant without any misfires at all. A friend has the P07 and I thought the trigger on it was better than my stock SDP. I plan on getting one soon. I just wish the trigger reach on the CZ guns were not so long in DA mode though.

I don't have a scale, so I can't say exactly what the weight on the trigger is, but the DA is not so heavy as to be a problem. As far as the reach, it works out pretty well for me and my over-sized mitts :D.

The Sphinx SDP DA trigger is heavier than most like... but switching to a CZ compact 16 lb. or 17 lb. trigger resolves the problem.

Check out the Cajun Gun Works site (CAJUNGUNWORKS.COM) for a trigger tuning kit. David Milan (the owner of CGW) is very familiar with both the standard CZs, the P-07/P-09s, and the Sphinx SDP.

(I have an SDP and run the 17 lb. compact hammer spring. A friend used the 16 lb. spring in his with good results; I tried one in mine and had some light strikes. I've got the CGW trigger kit, but as for installing it -- I just haven't gotten a ROUNDTUIT, yet.)

A stock unmolested p07/09 DA trigger is going to be ~9-10 lbs and SA 4.5-6lbs. A high round count will help smooth out the trigger and lower those weights.

An unintentional double tap on any gun is from poor trigger control and/or a poor grip (bump fire). A lighter trigger isn't to blame. My full size competition CZ's SA triggers are under 3lbs and I've never done a double tap I didn't mean to do.

My stock Sphinx SDP DA was a little over 11lbs and the SA was 5.5lbs. I installed the CGW Sphinx spring kit and that went down to 8lbs/4.5lbs and 100% reliable with all range and defensive loads I have used. My SDP after the spring change (and finding a holster) became one of my carry guns.

Nice looking pistol. I really like the shape of the slide stop because that's what I use it as, a stop and I release by slingshoting the slide. Glad to hear it has such a light trigger.

To the OP the P07 is a nice setup and the price is right. Out of the box they seem pretty good but really some into their own after being worked on by guys like David at CGW.

As to the comparisons to the Sphinx SDP the SDP trigger is heavy out of the box but in every other way it is a better trigger than the P07. IMHO it is better than a worked over P07 and I think David at CGW would agree. You have to replace everything in the P07 to get it close to what the SDP is out of the box.

What you need to do with the SDP is get a lower weight hammer spring and then compare. From that point I think the SDP will be head and shoulders above the stock P07 or even a CGW P07 but then again it is a $800+ pistol.

Did you do anything other than install the kit? I am considering getting one myself.

I got light strikes on the 16lb and 17lb Wolff springs with Tula, RWS and my reloads with CCI primers.

I know that Tula and CCI are known for hard primers but am still working on getting it to 100%. Once I have it dialed in I will just need a quality holster and it will become an everyday carry gun until the subcompact makes its way into the safe. LOL ;)
