Overview of new Minnesota hunting laws

Here is a brief synopsis of the new laws the legislature passed this session that effect game and fish. I'm apprehensive about a few of them.

10-11 yr old can deer hunt (before taking FAS). Until March 1 2009 the youth (who must be w/i immediate reach of adult) can take deer on accompanying adults lic....after March 1 2009 the 10-11 yr old will have to get a license at no cost.

After March 1 2009 small game hunters under age 16 will be required to get a small game license (at no cost) ....reason is to track hunter numbers.

Repealed requirement to be 60 feet from MV and have engine shut off while taking small game

Deer license changes (DNR received permission to drop the all season and multi-zone lic)

Baiting law changed, excludes bird feeders 6' off ground, if neighbor baits w/o hunters involvement then exempt.

Turkey stamp eliminated but license fee increased from $18 to $23

Master bear outfitter license (allows for one helper w/o additional fees)

minimum age for Elk/Moose hunting from 16 to 12

Big game can be taken with .22 centerfire and larger

pheasant hunters can take 3rd rooster daily from Dec 1 to end of season with 3 day possession limit of 9 during that part of season

DNR required to develop moose management and research plan

$369,000 through FY 09 for VHS surveillance and infrastructure

I do like the 10 & 11 year old deer hunting change as so many were allowing there young ones to sit with them and shoot, when it was against the law to do so.

Have to question the Big game w/.22Center fire, as that means Moose also.

I'm not so much against the new change on .220 and up but I really hope that we don't have a bunch of idiots out there this year rapidly shooting at anything that moves with their AR-15's.

I do see how this helps us firearms owners and hunters in the long run how ;)
