Overall Quality: S&W 686Plus Mountain Gun or Taurus 627 Tracker

I've been thinking about getting a .357mag revovler for a while. I like thw look & feel of the Taurus 627 Tracker and I was actually going to put one on lay-away during lunch today but the store owner said that you can't beat the over-all quality of the S&W 686Plus Mountain Gun. I know the politics of buying a S&W but I've been going to this particular gunshop for a while and seen this model on the shelf for several months so money was already made on it prior to the sell-out.

Speaking purely gun against gun, which one would I be better off with? Both are 7-rounders, stainless steel with a 4-inch barrel.

Providing that the smith was actualy purchased pre agreement I would look at it very closely. Quality control on the smiths is not what it used to be. You or a competent friend should check the trigger, timing, sight alignment etc.

Used 686s, LEO turn-ins are available for around 300 bucks in 4". The 2.5" ones seem to demand a premium. Even tho I greatly dislike stainless firearms, I do like my 686 2.5".

Sam...my favorite 9mm is the 9X32R

[Hey Fud,
Come on now! You have to know which is a better revolver. In my opinion, and my flak vest is on!! There isn't any gun manufacturer that could come close to the quality of a Smith & Wesson. They are a finely made piece of machined worked metal.

I have a 629 Classic, and that revolver is accurate, and the recoil is nominal. It is a straight shooter. Plus, the quality is excellent. Now that is how that is!

When it comes to there management, that is a whole other story as we all know. It is the worst managed gun manufactuer when dealing with the public and their dealers. Flame on!! Best regards, ED From PA

Ed, when it comes to pistols, my experience with S&W goes back nearly two decades and I don't need to ask as I consider myself to be a self-appointed expert on the subject. But, I'm fairly new to revolvers and just wanted some re-assurance. Thanks to you and Sam for confirming what I've been thinking.

Is this the S&W that weighs around 37 ounces or so, stainless, mtn. gun slim barrel, etc? I have only seen the S&W handout sheet but it looks like a great piece to me. How much is this place asking for it? If you don't get it I might be interested...

Fud:

Have you considered an older S&W Model 27 with 3.5 or 5 inch barrel? Preferably an S-Series gun but at least a 27-2 or earlier. Hard to beat for balance and accuracy. Most were beautifully made. Heavy, but not out of reason cf the 686. I'm prejudiced, but it's surely one of my favorite belt guns in either barrel length and generally is better fitted and more accurate than most current production pieces. Thanks to the popularity of high cap autos, they can still be found fairly reasonably as such things go.......

Fud,

I strongly suggest you consider a Smith 627 Special Edition. This is an "N" frame -- the 686 is an "L" frame -- all stainless, five-inch barrel with full under-lug, and with gold dot sight. It is THE sweetest, most accurate, most beautifully manufactured handgun I own. In fact, I am so impressed with the S&W 627 Special Edition that I now own two of them. Admittedly, "N" frame Smiths are big and they are also six (versus seven) shooters. However, I recommend this as your "all around" house gun -- anti-gator and anti-crook. It is incredibly accurate, durable, reliable, and simply a joy to own and to shoot.

Best regards.

FUD, I know you have a Taurus 85UL, so you know the quality of the Taurus.
I've a Model 627 Tracker in stainess steel. This is one sweet piece. It shoots very well and seems to be the best "out of box" Taurus I've ever bought.
