Over under for $1000 or less

I quail hunt twice a year. I would like to get an over under but wonder if I need Browning/Berretta/Benelli? Is there a cheaper manufacturer for an occasional shooter?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those B-gun or no gun guys, but I've seen alot of Brownings lately for around $800 on the used racks. However I've also owned 2 Yildez 20 ga O/U's and would be perfectly happy with them for what you're talking about.

Remington had its "spartan" line that included a O/U for around $500 I thought; think they are discontinued.

Baikal makes reasonably priced O/Us

Dicks sporting goods has a O/U made exclusively for them by Franchi.
The "diamond" is usually around $700-800 depending on sales.
I have a diamond and love it. Beautiful engravings for a less expensive O/U.

The truth about inexpensive double guns:

A double costs more to build than a pump. $1000 is the bare minimum. Take a look at the new Franchi O/U.

I've sold a lot of Baikal, Stoeger and Mossberg O/Us. Machining is crude, fit is poor, problems are many. Remington dropped the Baikal line because service work was too much to stand. We got one that was so poorly machined the barrels wouldn't fit the receiver.

If the budget won't cover a good O/U, you would be better off to buy a good pump until it will.

Buy used, or save your money until you can get a good O/U instead of wasting it on a cheap one.

If you can't justify the cost of a quality O/U then buy a quality auto for a lot less. That is what I have done. I would like to own a quality double, either SXS or O/U, but have wasted a lot of money on cheap ones over the years. I don't shoot enough to justify the expense of a good one and have been disappointed with cheap ones.

I wanted a good dependable gun that would meet my needs and have used either Beretta or Benelli autos, bought used in the $600-$700 range. They meet my needs, and budget.
