Over the week end, I cobbled together.....

....a tailgate cabinet for the range. First of all, I think this will not work for most of you because of the difference in the way I shoot. I basically back the truck right up to the firing line. I doubt that would work for most shooters.

It is made from 3/4 in plywood and then faced with oak from a pallet. The oak had some worm holes that needed to be filled which is the reason for the white marks on the front.

Here is a front view and one with the drawers open.

The cabinet with all of the stuff weighs about forty pounds. I installed some rails on the botton which engage the ribs in the bedliner. The box stays put no matter how enthusiastically I am driving.

I am almost ashamed of the way I shoot. I don't really focus on accuracy. I like working on consistency in the variables that go into shooting but I am not a very good shot.

I don't ever shoot with others present, and I don't ever do any comtetition shooting.

But I sure to love messing with the things that are associated with shooting BP revolvers.

Good work again Doc. I think I'd have left the worm holes for age character tho. Don't worry about how good you do or don't shoot as long as you're shooting.

Very nice rig, very nice.
Long ago I turned my old Chevy pickup into a scheutzenwagen. I store my target frame and shooting box (no ammo, powder or primers) in the pickup, under the cover of its lockable canopy.
But for multipurpose vehicles, this is a great idea. Exceptionally attractive and practical. Good job!

Very nice Doc! You did a great job on it and it's obvious that you are "organized"! A nice new box to go with your new shooting location!

Don't fret about your shooting - like Hawg said - the important thing is that you are shooting! I shot competition when I was shooting North South Skirmish Assoc. - muskets and cannons. I will have to say though, that some of the boys took it way too serious for my liking - not that there's anything wrong with shooting competition - I respect those that do. I'm just not that competitive - I shoot for the fun of it. I did shoot round ball with an informal club years ago - we shot in a woods and shot for things like a ham or everyone threw in a hand made trinket of some type. I was making custom rifles at the time and it was a good place to see what they'd do - which in my hands - wasn't much. We had everything from a well known gunbuilder with his custom rifle to fellows with CVAs, etc. There was a fellow that always showed up with a H & A underhammer that he had put a shorter 32 caliber barrel on. He kept all of his shooting supplies in a musket cap tin - literally all - balls, patches, caps, etc. He was a quite, likable fella and he would smoke everybody there. Some of 'em didn't take it very well - I, myself, marveled at the guy as he was good. Point I'm tryin' to make is . . don't be afraid to take somebody shootin' with you. It's not about how well you can or can't shoot of if you think you'll make yourself look foolish - heck, I don't have any problem with doing that naturally. It's about having FUN! Let us know how the box works and how the new shooting location is working out - enjoyed the photos of both! :)

....you know, I am absolutely ashamed at my lack of ability to make anything out of wood, metal, or iron (or cowpies for that matter) that looks good enough for someone else to see.....so there! :D

Kinda like the old joke "I'm fat but your ugly and I can go on a diet," I know that I will never be a good carpenter or gunsmith, but you can shoot more and become a better shot. ;)

Keep shootin'!

Sweet!

Very nice Doc! I love seeing people put their energy into crafting something to satisfy a need... good ol' Mother Necessity!

Doc your craftsmanship with guns and now woodworking never ceases to amaze me! Excellent work! Love seeing your projects.

.

Thanks fellas

Hawg, Thanks

Gato, Thanks

BBB, Thanks
Actually I used to shoot with others when I was active duty and shooting for proficiency and medals and such. At that time I did not like the regulation associated with shooting with others. You have to be three times as careful to be about only half as safe. So when I started shooting BP revolvers, I swore I would never shoot with anyone else present. Now I shoot alone for the solitude. (And, most people would not tolerate my shenanigans; slow loading, slow shooting, check this, check that, stuff like that.)

Additionally, like you, I am attracted to folks who are eccentrics and repulsed by folks who are fanatics.

T6, Thanks

Zen, Thanks,

Necessity really was the mother in this project. The lasty time I went shooting, I was trying to use the tailgate of the pickup. No place to set the cylinder for loading, balls rolling all over the place, completely disorganized. I declared to myself, "This is a problem which is begging for a simple solution!"

Bill, Thanks

I hope some of the stuff I do give folks some ideas of their own.

BTW, Bill,

I will be in your area on the 14, 15, and 16 of June. Got a meeting at the Saint Leo Campus.

Nice job doc. Support equipment storage and transportation can be challenging to say the least. I have five different tool boxes for different categories and still manage to leave something at home.

MCB

I live in constant fear of the day upon which I arrive at the range only to discover I left my revolvers on the counter at the house.

Doh!

That's what's so great about being able to just walk outside and start shooting.:D

You would still have to go back inside if you forgot your guns. And if you were going shooting and forgot the guns, I shudder to think what else you might have forgotten!

I'd prolly forget my pants before I forgot my guns.:D I usually keep everything I need in a possibles bag.

They say memory is the first thing to go...I forget what is the second thing.

Hawg, your pants is what I was getting at. Hahaha:p
