out of state

I am a resident of California and own guns legally. Have completed gun safety courses and gone through several background checks. I have been assigned to a job in Virginia for the next 9 months and want to know if I can legally buy either a handgun or rifle while i'm there and how to do it legally.

Being assigned to a job ---- temporarily - doesn't make you a resident.

Are you going to get a Virginia Driver's license / and give up your California Driver's license ?
What state are you going to file your tax return in ? ( that's probably your state of residency )...

Unless you get a driver's license, vote in VA, change your residency....etc...you are still a California resident and can not buy firearms in VA. However, you can make a purchase from a FFL in VA and have it shipped to a FFL in Ca, where you have receive it and undergo a NICS check, assuming the firearm is CA legal.

residency

I intend to keep my residency in california because I will be returning back home. So you are saying if I go through an FFL and buy a gun I cannot have the gun while i'm there it would have to shipped to California before I can use it?

if its for 9 months, just get a license there if you intend to buy guns. It should be easy to get a CA license again when you return.

If you are not a resident of the state you're trying to buy it from - no, you can't pick up the handgun there .../you will have to have it shipped to an FFL dealer in CA ( and it will have to be a CA legal firearm ) ....and pay fees to transfer it, taxes on it, etc in CA and pick it up in California.

Just because your passing thru / or stopping for 9 months there on a job -- doesn't change your residency / and doesn't change whether you can buy a handgun in that state.

Yep, and I think you still have to pay Cal state tax's but not VA state tax's. I could be wrong. But I've been there, I worked in FL temp, and was required to pay MN state tax's.

How often will you be travelling back to CA? If, say, monthly, it should not be hard to make arrangements with a CA dealer and get copies of his license. That way, the VA seller can ship the guns to him and you can pick them up in CA. I doubt a CA dealer will hold them for 9 months, but you can always ask.

One thing to remember, if you do switch your drivers license to Virginia, you'll have to wait 30 days from date of issue of DL until you can receive a handgun. You can purchase it, but the gun store has to hold onto it for the 30 days after issue or you can just wait the 30 days, do the background check, then leave with it that day.
