Out-of-State Purchase

When I go on vacation to another state, and if I find a good buy on a rifle, can I purchase it? Would it have to be shipped to my FFL here? Is it not permitted at all? Thanks.

Federal firearms law does not prevent a qualified citizen who resides in another state from purchasing a rifle or shotgun in a face-to-face transaction with a federally licensed dealer outside his state if: the purchase would be legal in both states, and if the regulatory requirements of both states are complied with.

This applies only to a purchase from a licensed dealer.

Depends on the state. California you can't bring guns back into. As I understand it, you can only purchase a gun in a contiguous state. This only applies to licensed dealers.

You can bring firearms back into California. Also, the continguous state rule was repealed several years ago. rgkeller is correct as far as the Federal requirements go.

We must be loaded with lawyers here. Three responses, four opinions. :)

MY understanding is that rgkeller is correct.

rgkeller is correct as far as Federal law is concerned. State laws may differ however. Add to this, the requirement that the sale be legal in BOTH states, and meet any requirements in either state may make a dealer unwilling to sell. He may not be sure what your local laws are, or he may not be willing to go to the extra paperwork (if any is required by those local laws).
