Out of box Rem. 300 win mag report

I just purchased an inexpensive Rem 700 in 300 WIn Mag (24 inch light weight barrel, seemingly cheap black plastic stock) to use the receiver as a base for a custom 300 WM rifle, and before relinquishing it to my gunsmith, took it to the range today to shoot it for fun. I put Leu. MKIV two piece bases on it and a Leu. 3.5-10x42 M3 LR scope that I have for testing purposes mounted in Leu. QR rings. I ran a dry patch through the rifle, and after getting it pretty close to POA POI with 3 rounds of Fed Prem. 180g Woodleigh SP ammunition, it shot a 0.55 inch 3 round group at 100 yds. from a bench. It then rang the steel at 200 and 400 yds using the BDC. It makes me wonder if I should have it customized. Could I have found a great out of the box rifle?

Hickman...sigh...........

Wait until the cleaning begins...................
For a .300 WM , to really shine, at long range, and to get the INTENED benefit out of it, (instead of a .308), you need a 26" tube...........
With a 24" barrel, ADL, I presume, you are not doing anything more than a .308 will............except burn a LOT more powder, with a lot more recoil, and a lot more in ammo costs.
But, to each his own;)

My BAD

Was thinking of the short action models....not the Maggies.
Still needs 26"s.............
22", CORRECTED ABOVE POST

I got a 700 BDL in 1999 chambered in 300 Ultra Mag. It shoots just like yours right out of the box. The trigger is nice too.

Customize it!!! :D You can make a nice custom tactical gun with that action. All you need is a little action work(truing and lapping of the bolt), a new barrel(at least #7 and 26"), and a new stock(possibly a McMillan A2 or A4) and you'll have a great rifle. Especially since your scope, mount and rings are screaming to be on a nice tac rifle. Do you have anyone in mind to do the work? If not I'm sure Tshoes or I could find someone for you.:D

On the assumption that you are contemplating a custom .300 Win Mag (you may mean Weatherby in your post) I'd replace the stock and get to shooting. Put a new barrel on it when you shoot this one out.

You may get a bit more velocity with a 26 vrs. 22 inch barrel, but I think the difference is academic.

Sounds like you have a good one.

To respond, it is a 24" barrel, blind magazine model, Rem 700 .300 Win Mag. I have a good gunsmith that WAS going to work on it, but it is shooting so well, that I am going to find another receiver to build a heavier barrelled .300 Win Mag on, and keep this one as my lighter weight one(even though it only has a 24"). It turns out that this same gunsmith had bedded the barrel for the prior owner, who only shot it a couple of times, so it has had that amount of work done on it. Still, it is a very accurate rifle for a standard lightweight barrel. I plan on using the scope that I have on it now on my new heavier rifle, and putting a spare 6x Leupold on this one. Thanks for your replies as usual.

da current .300

Hichman,
I think you did well in answering your own question. My only .300 is a Ruger #1 varmint special made in 1977. It's a blast to say the least and is my long range unit.
