Took another new shooter to the range for the day and he loved it! Can't wait to go again! My son and I have been averaging about one new shooter per month. Sometimes two.
After we got home from a day at the range my son Brian and I made a run to the bank. The teller at the bank was a fill in from another bank. When she asked how we were doin' and we said "great!", she naturally asked what we were doin' that was so much fun. When we told her about being at the shooting range all day her eye's lit up! She said, I love guns. I used to carry a Glock when I traveled all over the country but couldn't get a national conceal carry permit and finally decided to not take the risk of being arrested. Then eventually due to various changes in life situation, (Not the least of which is the fact that her present husband doesn't care for guns.) she got rid of it and hasn't shot in a while. I told her about how we get together with some freinds and new shooters for a shoot once a month. About that time one of the regular employees said "Oh no, did you get him talking guns? He'll never shut up now ."referring to me.
Well, the fill in teller turned around and said "yes we are talking guns. In fact, I'm going shooting with them the next time they go. I have to replace the one I got rid of with a new one anyway. All I have right now is an old star pistol. Need to try some out and see what's out there now and find something that fits." You should have seen the mouths of the other employees and customers. I think they were stuck in the open position. We traded phone numbers so we could hook up for going to the range and then left. Everybody else except one business customer which was a woman with a money bag was in shock. The business customer was kind of looking at us chuckling and smiled. I guess she was carrying.
Don't be afraid to turn the subject matter to guns wherever you are. For now it's still legal to talk about guns. Better take advantage before that changes. We need to open the door to new people and make them comfortable. The next time we go shoting we're taking a lady and her boyfreind from the local metro food store. A lady and her boyfreind from Walmart. One of my customers and obviously the one from the bank, even though that doesn't really qualify as a new shooter.
Are you afraid to talk to strangers about guns? Better do it before it becomes a crime.
