OT: Urban Trapping?

I don't necessarily hate cats, but being woke up twice last night by two different cats in heat yowling in the bushes underneath my bedroom window really pissed me off. It seems to be that time of year and my bushes seem to be the local mating grounds for some reason.

Obviously, the owners of these animals are negligent or they were strays. In either case, I'm pretty sick of it and I pretty much lost any resistance to killing someone's pet about 3 am this morning. I got out the hose and sprayed the little whores after listening to about 20 minutes of caterwalling. After the second incident, I also hosed the whole area with the idea that they had probably marked the bushes with scent and that would only encourage other cats.

What do you guys think? Is trapping cats in your backyard too harsh? What about displaying the hides, would that be too far?

Our indoor cat is in hear 40% of the time and very loud for such a small critter. That said, I would refrain from damaging the cats (live-trapping is fine but more bother than it is worth)...guess I just don't like killing what isn't a threat to my life and may be somebody's pet. I'd be more inclined to rig spinklers.

Ammonia sprinkled near your bushes will keep them away. It'll also burn out your grass, flowers, bushes, *and* your nose hair, so be careful with it.

Wan't some extra strong stuff? Visit a local company with a blueprint machine. They'll probably let you have a gallon jug for free.

My city will loan a live trap for 2+ weeks for free, with only a $20 deposit. It's pathetically easy to catch the strays. Just put in something meaty, or even use catfood (big leap of logic!) in the livetrap, then take the kit and kaboodle (!) to the pound, re-up you loaner signup, and do it again. 2 weeks of this, and your neighborhood is quieter, and even your neighbers are walking around saying "Kitty-kitty! Where's the kitty?" Advise them that sometimes the pound even picks up loose cats. They'll get the cats they mean to keep... after they've been spayed. ( :)) I really like cats, but I really believe that it's kinder to put them down than to allow them to go feral and breed and breed and breed.

During the late bow season I also trap coons. Since I hunt and trap on the edge of a huge metropolis, you can imagine how many animals we have. In addition to the wild critters, we also have an abundance of domestic ones which are local pets or strays thrown out of car windows by the city scum who think this is wilderness.

This last season after trapping several coons (all the stupid ones), there were a couple of big (smart) ones that just wouldn't fall for the live trap routine. So I changed the bait around a bit after having a string of tripped and stripped traps. The next morning when I checked my traps, one of them had one of the local felines inside. This pretty little kitty (a persian or some other longhair) was cowered into the corner of the trap shaking like the pussy it was.

Normally I dispatch the coons with my .22 pistol, but I wasn't sure what to do with the cat. After taking a closer look at this poor thing, I realized that it had probably been in the trap all night, and tormented by the 2-3 big coons that I hadn't yet caught. I mean tormented. Both of its ears were biten off and it had hair pulled out all over. I felt that that certainly was enough to educate the cat to stay off my property. So I flipped the cage and the door bounced open. The cat ran so fast to the next county that I highly doubt it'll ever come back.

I actually wasn't too interested in the live trap option. I don't have time to make trips to the pound. I live in a neighborhood with a LOT of elderly people. I have cats around here like you wouldn't believe. It doesn't help that most of them have cat food on the porch, either. Not only do I have cats, the skunks are pretty thick too (no doubt the cat food all over helps) and the combination is pretty smelly.

I would bet I could get 3-5 cats a day for at least a couple of weeks. I'm also starting to wonder if someone close by is one of those nut-jobs that has 93 cats. As far as the ammonia, I would have to spray the whole yard and that would mean my 2 yr old couldn't play out there anymore. Besides, I have this great idea to sell cat hair lined slippers (just kidding!).

I think at least 2 of the "regulars" got to go one way or another. I know one of the owners and have talked to her about keeping her cat in and she was pretty beligerent.

Jack:

Just be careful, there are a lot of cat owners who feel that they like their cat's more than they do people... :)

Don't you have a dog that will just eat them? I had a Lab/Setter mix once that snatched every stray that wandered in. Natural, organic control method ;)
