OT - RV/Trailer question

Guys, I shoot benchrest, and that generally involves hauling a lotta crap around. So much so that if I choose to camp at the range, I feel a little cramped for space with only a shell on a long bed Chevy S-10 pickup. I'm thinking of building either a taller camper shell, or getting a small 4x8 trailer from Harbor Freight, and building a "teardrop" style trailer (they were popular in the fifties) on it... Does anyone know the legality of this? Anyone do it?

Here in Arizona, no problem with trailor. Put the chassis together and take it down to Motor Vehicle place, pay money and get title and tags. Then build the rest at your leisure.

You will entertain yourself to no end learnin to back a short trailor with a long truck.

Sam....the more space, the more gear.

Yee haw - Had that fun with a jeep, and one of the little shorty military off road trailers. And I didn't know how to drive a stick...

I don't think that the motor pool guys liked me very much after that...

Anyone here ever build one of these puppies?

The bare chassis from Harbor Freight comes ready to be licensed. The DMV don't care what you build on it.

OTOH, you could save some effort by buying a regular box trailer from Pace or Haulmark.

At the RV shows, I've seen the small Jayco Quest "pop-ups" for around $3,500. They're only about 8' long when folded, and weight around 1,000 lbs. This will give you a propane stove, icebox, AC/DC lights, a half way decent bed, plenty of ventilation, and a table to eat at. Throw in a $50 port-a-pot, and you got home away from home. For a few bucks more, you can add a propane furnace, 3-way refrigerator (works on propane), and even Air Conditioning (but you would need some place to plug in).

This is probably a bad time of year to do it, but keep an eye on the paper for a very small, hard-sided travel trailer. I often see them advertized as "Deer-hunter specials" for $750-1500. It might be cheaper to start w/ one of those and wreck out what you don't need, rather than with a new trailer.

Having attended a coupla benchrest matches as a newbie, it's awesome to see what-all the serious guys haul out to the range. You could colonize a new planet w/ what some of the guys bring.

There's a new breed of travel trailer on the scene you might want to look at. The back can be configured with sliding doors or a drop-down ramp. The ones with the ramp are really popular with the all-terrain cycle types because the back half is a bare as you want it or customized as you desire. The front half has the living, cooking, and personal functions installed.

You could build the back up with workbenches, cabinets, tool chests, etc.

Thing is, I don't wanna be hauling around something that's 20 feet long... While I appreciate the concept of the trailers with the garages, they would really be overkill. Right now I'm thinking of building one from the frame up - it doesn't look like anyone sells small ones, except to vintage car buffs...

bruels, any links to something like the trailer you're talking about? Might be just the ticket-always hauling lots of stuff to elk camp and plan to add a dirt bike to the collection soon. thanks
