Report: Ohio man beheads uncle's corpse
TOLEDO, Ohio. A 43-year-old man was under psychiatric observation after sawing off the head of his dead uncle, saying he planned to eat the brain to resurrect the uncle's spirit, a newspaper reported Friday.
John Hawk was charged with abuse of a corpse after he allegedly used a hand saw to lop off the corpse's head during a private visitation prior to William Hawk's funeral Saturday in rural Rockford, Ohio, near Toledo, the Toledo Blade reported.
Hawk, described by acquaintances as a "harmless" eccentric, told authorities he took the head home because he believed he might be able to resurrect his uncle's spirit by consuming his brain, the newspaper reported.
The head quickly was recovered and returned to the casket for the funeral service.
Hawk, who authorities said had no previous criminal record, was sent to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation.
