OT: Pentium III / website tracking?

The Pentium !!! ;) does have a serial number. It can be disabled in the computer's BIOS. If you've never been inside the BIOS or are unsure of how to disable the settings, software is available on the intel website www.intel.com that will permanently disable it. Or so they claim. Give the BIOS a shot. My understanding is once disabled in the BIOS it can't be re-enabled by software or a more aggressive website design.

Most BIOS setup programs are entered by pressing 'delete' at the very beginning of the boot process. Change nothing but the processor serial number enable/disable setting. Save your changes and you're done.

The BIOS isn't a mystery, but if you're unsure of something or what it does, leave it alone.

I second DarkStar...go to the bios and disable there. Boot up and carefully watch...it will say something like "press DELETE (or F2) to enter BIOS set-up"
Press the appropriate key fast as you only have about 5-10 seconds to do it, otherwise you must reboot to catch it again.
Before changing any settings, write down current settings in the various categories. There are walk thru instructions so don't be intimidated. When you have located and changed settings, you must then choose "Save settings to CMOS (or BIOS) and exit".

Its a snap
